Thlrty-SIx Miles of Canal to Irrigate 17,000 Acres of Semi-Arid Land- Reaches from Head of Yakima Val ley to Columbia River at Wallula. The Northern Pacific Railroad Co, liiw installed one ot the areatest Irrl eatlon projects In the Northwest at kennewicl;, Washington, and the great canal which has been con structed for thirty-six miles, is now about eomiiietn. It will Irrigate some of the besc land in Washington, and Us results will be watched with much interest by those Interested In irri gation in the Northwest states. About February 1, or a year after work on It was begun, Kennewick canal will be completed. Its lenfttli is 36 miles. through the Remi-arid part of Yakima county, Washington, and sotnethlne like 17,000 acres will be irrigated hy the water irom the canal. The soil of these acres is said to bo even rich ei than that of the famous North Ya- tima fruit region, being volcanic ash and gravel.
