Now In Jail Figured In Two Causeless Fights Last Night Lester Lewis, who has been figur ine; quite frequently In police and justice court for assaults, not able to pa- a fine of $20. is now in the city jail The fine was imposed this morning , by Judge FiU Gerald on two charges. ! The first was on the charge of as 1 sault and battery on Charles Garti , ner. It seems that Lewis had a . grudge against Gardner and they met 1 at S o'clock last night in the barber ' shop, on the corner of Court and .Mam streets, wuere t-ewis sianea me l fight Gardner got out of Lewis' way ; as quickly as possible, but not until I they had broken a large mirror and j done a little other damage. Gardner i appeared before Judge FiU Gerald j and swore out a warrant for the ar rest of Lewis. 1 In the meantime. Lewis, who was well filled up "with whisky, went into Schmidt's saloon and started another, row with a young man by the name of Kelly. They were parted and 1 Lewis stepped up to the bar to take a drink with a friend hen a brother , of young Kelly took a hand in the af-, fair. The fight waxed warm and furi ous for several minutes- and Kelly got considerably the best of the en counter. Lewis' face was badly bruised and cut and this morning his j eyes were black and swelled out of, proportion. The police thistle was sounded 1 and the officers parted the fighters, j They were taken into police headquar ters where an effort was made by his friends to raise- a $40 bond for Lewis. In this they failed and he had to go to jail where he remained over night. The Kelly brothers were also locked up and lor their part in the aSray were fined $5 each. They paid their fine and went on their way. but Lewis could not raise the necessary $20. A RANK FRAUD. Woman Beggar Solicited Money From Pendleton People Yesterday. A woman giving her name as Mrs. Frederick Peterson, with a brood of, five small children tagging at her' heels, was In town Thursday and sue-' ceeded In gathering In a goodly num-' ber of sheckels from those charita-j bly inclined. I Since Mrs. Peterson left town, it; has been learned that she is simply traversing the country working the) same gag in each town she passes through and that she is a rank fraud. To work her graft to perfection, how-) ever, she should get hold of a map and study the geography of the coun- try a little. Those with half an eye. could see from her hard luck story! here that she was a fraud. She saidj her home was in Pasco, the rendez-i vous of toughs, and that she was on i her way to Spokane, where her hus-j band, who bad been a railroad man,! was in the hospital with a bad siege' of rheumatism which the doctors an-, nounced would kill him. As she had , no money she was only seeking to get enough to reach his bedside be fore he passed in his last checks, as she could not bear the thought of his passing into the beyond without once more seeing his face. When telling this story she would place a dirty bandana over her face and begin to cry and her brood would gather around her skirts and help her in set ting up a howl calculated to melt the heart of the hearer. The story of being from Pasco and on her way fo Spokane would have souuded better had Pasco not been between here and Spokane and Mrs. Peterson could have reached Spokane for almost the same price she had to pay from Pasco to Pendleton. How ever, she did not know but that Pen dleton was on her nearest route to Spokane from the town In the sand T ... Sx "Oh ain't that sweet?" "That big one there in the i corner is just too lovely for anything." "Ain't this one with a blue j dress just dear?" "I wish my pa would buy f tne this one here in front." These are but a sample of the remarks that come j from the little girls as t they look in the window at FRAZIER'S Book Store. n and admire the magnifi cient display of dolls 3 dunes of the Columbia, and at last accounts no one has Informed her of her mistake.
