MEW AGAIN SAYS THAT ELECTRIC ROAD AND PLANT IS A GO. Has Been Busy at Work Now View Ing the Proposed Route and Engi neers Will Take the Field. H. Mellmnnn, president of the Wash ington & Oregon Electric Railway, Light and Power Company, who It wab thought by many had thrown up the possibility of building an electric rail wny from Pendleton to Dayton, and left the country for good, spent last night In town a guest at Hotel St. George, Air. Mellmnnn la accompanied by Col. S. W. Ferguson, a prominent capi talist of Los Angeles. Col. Ferguson Is looking ovor tho proposed route for the electric railway line and they drove down from Walla Walla today. Viewing the Route. They arrived In Walla Walla from Los Angeles Sunday evening and this morning, hired a team and rig and drove along the proposed lino to Wes ton. There they changed teams and drove on to Pendleton and the teams were sent back. Messrs. Mellmnnn and Ferguson returned to Walla Walla this morning on the 8:10 trnln. They will spend today In Wnlla Walla and hire another rig, drive out along tho line from there to Dayton and inspect tho country through which the pro posed road Is to run. From Dayton they will drive to Marengo, on the Tu kanon, and Inspect tho power site pur chased by the company to generate the power for lights and railroad. From Marengo they will proceed to Pomeroy where a contract has been let to furnish Pomeroy with electric lights rrom Ihelr Tukanon power site, Says Reports Were False. Mr. Mellmann Is somowhat worked up over the stories circulated that he had left tho country and the Intima tlon that he had discovered that he had undertaken a bigger Job than he could get away with and had left for parts unknown. He says he has spent the time since he left In the East and California and now ho Is back fully prepared to complete their contract with Walla Walla, Umatilla and Col umbia counties and build their road He stated further that the report or his being gone for good which orig inated In Walla Walla was started by personal enemies of the proposed road and he was. here now to show them that he meant business from the start. Why Milton Was Abandoned. Ho also explained why they aban doned the first contemplated site for power plant at Milton. This move was one of the things which gave color to the statements that the proposition had been abandoned. Mr. Mellmann says when they first got their right-of-way In the county, or first talked of putting in the road Milton offered to donate tho company a power site on the Walla Walla river at that place. They went ahead and had the place selected, surveyed and made the an nouncement that the first power plant would be secured there whore tho power would be generated for running tho road and lighting this end of the territory with electricity. "When the people of Milton found out that wo meant business, and after wo had gone to the expense of surveying and making all necessary preliminaries for beginning work on the plant," said Mr. Mellmann, "tho company was told It would have to pay $3000 for the site. This was more than tho com pany would stand and the Milton plant was abandoned." Will Light Farm Houses. ff Mollmnnn hhIiI further that thev' ha.i ui.fiir.iil n e-ociii unwer site on the Tuxanon ample for nil purposes, but thoy wanted the Milton site also. Power will bo transmitted from tho Tukanon plant not only to run tho road, but for itgniing overy mnu houso and city residence along the proposed line. Engineers to Take the Field. Ferguson Favorably Impressed. Col. Ferguson is well pleased with the prospects of the now enterprise. Ho toys there Is no reason In the world for doubting that It will pay a good dividend on every dollar expend ed In putting tho line Into working shape. He claims to hnvo interested In tho promotion of svoal car lino enterprises and in .. ftw electric line plants and Is well satisfied to risk the outcome. A Pendleton Fmnchlse.
