Cattle Men Are Determined to Keep Sheep Herders Off Their Range, ' and Even Threaten to Kill the Herders. For the past several years trouble has been brewing between the cattle and sheep men of the interior. Only within two years past, however, has this trouble amounted to an open outbreak, and last year -was the first real serious trouble that has devel oped between the two factions. The greatest kick has been against outside stock, especially sheep, In vading the range. Now it is an nounced by a circular sent out by the sheep and cattle men of Grant county, that Monday, July 7, has been set for the purpose of getting all the local representative stock men together and have a meeting to try and settle the local difficulties and arrange some amicable means for settling their troubles and divid ing the ranges. Both sheep and cattle men are re ported to be electing delegates to represent them in the meeting which is to be held at Canyon City. This meeting is principally for the pur pose of dividing the range between the sheep men and cattle owners of Grant county and no provision will be made for the outsider. If it is a success and things are arranged am- The Alta House is desirous of securing the service of a cook and is using the classified ad vertisements of this paper to secure one. icably It is said that both classes of stockmen will combine in an effort to enforce the dead line rules and keep outside stock from, invading the ranges of Grant county. Sheep Being Shot. Several times last year tho bitter feeling of the interior stock men against outside Invasion broke out and several shooting scrapes y;ore tho result. Many head of cattle and sheep were killed, but last winter it was arguC'1 thlat a11 of tllls troublo had been settled and iiiftre WOUld 00 no more bloodshed. This hfia not proven true. Only a few weeks ago a band of sheep were fired into at near valley, Grant county, and 200 were said to have been slain. These were from a band being driven into Grant county, and although, having? been warned several times, tho herd ers- paid no attention and tho shoot lng was the result. Feeling Very Intense. According to advices from the In terI6r the feeling is very Intense in the vicinity of the shooting over out side sheepmen trespassing on the cattle range and the cattle men seem to be determined to put a stop to it if possible. They go far enough to assert that they will kill every head of sheep driven into the coun try and, if necessary, before the out side stock men will recognize the home men's rights, they will kill a few herders. A dead line has been established. but the herders have made no effort to keep' their flocks outside of the bounds and as a result. It la claimed that the holdings of many settlers have been eaten off and in some In stances crops have been broken into in the absence of the owner and de stroyed by the sheep, tfhls has brought the settlers up 'in arms and the result may be serious, in an other shooting scrape which occurred iow "days alter the one mentioned above, it is said 150 ewes belonging to William Mascall, a Bheep man of, the South Fork, were killed. This shooting occurred near the head of j ltocic creek. The men doing the shooting held up the herders, took of your heart, but I feel thers ta a their arms from thorn and burned up the camp supplies. , Different Opinions. Many different opinions exist among the stockmen as to the right of the range. Some contond that outside sheep men have no right to the range which justly belongs to l" sloc'i "u"u,t lV . h(,,nT1I?n tn nno mnn nR ,,,,, n fo another and, being free to all, should be used by the outsider if ho wants it as much as by the man at homo, who pays his taxes into the treasury of Grant county and helps to pay the running expenses of the county. As long as the stock man keeps his stock off the private ownlngs of tho Individual he is at homo anywhere on government land. Thinks Situation Serious. In speaking of the recent outbreak, the Grant County News says: "It is certain that something must bo done soon, as tho feeling Is grow ing more intense each season, nnd more serious trouble Is looked for as the feeling of vengeance increases. Although no lives have been reported lost as yet, still loss of life may oc cur any day. So long as parties on both Bides are determined, as they appear to be, something is going to drop." Appeal to U. S. District Attorney. In regard to ;the trouble betweon the cattle and sheep men and to as certain what are the rights of tho cattle men, if any, over tho sheop men, the following letter published in the Oregonlan, was written At torney Hall by a sheep man of Mon ument: "For the last several years there (Concluded on page 8.)
