The fegistrationbooks are now be ing kept open from 7 o'clock in the morning until. 8 in the evening ex cept Saturday and those who do nbt register cannot hlnmn but themselves. Up to Friday evening 3007 names were on the registration books and today hns been a busy one for Regis tration Clerk Kennedy, but at tho rate they are comine in somebody Is going to get left After today there are only 10 days in which to register and it is estimated that just two fifths of the voters of the county have availed themselves of the opportun ity to vote at tho June election. The books close at 5 o'clock, one week from Thursday, and when they aro closed without your name inscribed therein you cannot vote in June with out great trouble. Of course, it is .possible for a man to vote, who is entitled to, whether he registers or not, but it will cause i him considerable more trouble than it would to visit the clerk's office and affix his name to the registration books m the regular way. The law provides that a man who 'is entitled to vote con go to the polls and get six free-holders to swear to his place of residence and to his right to cast a vote and he can then cast his bal lot without having been registered, but this will entail considerable trouble and the voter had much bet ter be registered than to risk this, for it may be a nard matter to get six free-liolders together at one time who can swear that a mantis entitl ed to a vote. Electio nday Js just i0 days off, and every citizen should have inter est enough in his country to cast his vote for the ticket that he thinks is the most likely to bo the best for the majoriy of the people. City Authorities Have Power to Keep the Street Open at All Times. Considerable complaint has been heard recently by people living south of the O. It. & N. depot about the way the railroad company holds up those, going to or from home who "have to pas sthe depot. It is not infrequent for tho morning passenger train to stand across Main street from one side to the other, for from 10 to 20 minutes, and at all times during the day freight cars are be ing switched through the yards and often they are stopped and allowed to stand across the street and side walks for several minutes. This can not be avoided by the company alto gether, but when one is in a hurry it Is very annoying to have to stand and wait for a railroad crew to get ready to pull a train out of the road before he can pass. It has been the rule of the company to regard the feelings of the traveling public, but It is possible that they are getting a little careless of late. The city authorities should see that the pub lic is not inconvenienced in this connection any more than it is abso lutely necessary. s) 3 3 3 3 0J To Please All Tastes Are Our Gandies They are fresh and deli cious. There are thirty head of Hereford bulls yet unsold that were brought out to be auctioned off at Heppner La Grande and Pendleton and Baker City. They are at the Union stock yards "at Portland, and , will be dis nosed of at Dublic sale next Tuesdav May 6th. The railroads are giving reduced fares to those attending the sale. Here is a chance for all who desire fo get some of the best bred Hereford bulls in the country. It is a good thing for the northwest to have this new blood brought here and it is a good thing for the fine stock owners to have, their business adver tised by the newspapers free, while they get big prices for their bulls the railroads get pay for transporting them and everybody is paid for his services except tho gullible news papers. HIT A MAN WITH BOCK. This Fined $40 and Trimmings for Display of Force. Walla Walla, May 3. It costs $40 and trimmings to strike a man with a rock upon the streets of Walla Walla. Justice Glassford yesterday fixed this sum as the value of blow struck Fred McCutcheon by Mike Itodell. both soldiers at the fort. Wednesday evening an alterca tion occurred on the street and a rock was viciously thrown by Ro dell, striking his victim near the ear. The trouble led up to the shooting of one soldier by another a few minutes later. The fine will be worked out, as the soldier had no mpney, and when he leaves the county Jail he will have to face a charge at tho fort which will make the penalty very severe In the end. The Independent Warehouse. "Will be open for business, with a competent man In charge, to see that all customers .receive prompt and careful attention. Wool growers .and wheat growers will find It to their Interest to store with this house, where they can ship over either lines of road. References, First National Eank.
