John Hubberton, the author of "Hel en's Babies," said to his publisher when the novel was about ready to appear, "If you' want to save the cost of a great deal of advertising, just give me 500 copies of this book, and I'll guar antee to distribute them so that we'll have a success without a cent's worth of advertising being needed." The publisher, a little reluctantly, took Mr. Habbertou at his word. The 'author thereupon made a list of all the important bookstores In the United States and found out the nnme of the head of the department of Ac tion in each store. Now, the heads of all book departments are all fiends in the collection of autogruph first edi tionsthat is, with the nuthor's signa ture upon the Imprint There is scarce ly an exception to this rule. Mr. Hab bertou, being wise in all that concerns bookstores, accordingly sent to ench head a copy of "Helen's Babies" that contained not only his autograph, but a pleasant letter also that expatiated on the merit of the work. Tho heads were delighted. They instructed their salesmen and saleswomen in the book department to boom "Helen's Babies," to recommend it to every hesitating customer. And thus the book succeed ed, though it would have succeeded anyway upon Its merit. Philadelphia Record. Forgot Their Sorrow. In Ills autobiography, "The Making of an American," Jacob A. RIls tells an am using story of a visit he once made to the house of three sisters whoso brother had been drowned: "It was a very hot July day, and to guard against suustroke I had put a cabbage leaf in my hat. On the way over I forgot all about It, and tho leaf, getting limp, settled down snugly ou my head, ltke a ridiculous green skull cap. Knowing nothing of this, I was wholly unprepared for the' effect my entrance, hatless, had upon the weep ing family. Tho young ladies ceased crying, stared wildly and then, to my utter bewilderment, broke into hyster ical laughter. For the moment I thought they had gone mad. For some years afterward the thought of it had the same effect upon mo that tho cab bage leaf produced so unexpectedly in that grief stricken home." Headquarters for traveling Hen.
