If Paine' s Celery Compound Had Early Been Used. instead of Putting Faith In OSS Cure- Alls. Worth The coming of Haverly's ministrcls on the 25th brings to mind the recent death in Hslt lake of the famous founder of the organisation. Jack Hat- erly.as stated in the Kast Oregon in uV telegram, on etiteiuber I'M. The career of "Jack" Haverly was unique. He was born shout 184.1 at Hellefoule, Ohio, snd bsd to right his own wsv from the stsrt. His lather as sn American aud bis mother sn Kngliah woman, snd they died when he waa little more than an inlant. He had inherited the liesl traits of both, but this wss sll that wss left him. At 15 he began to sell newspapers and sjon got s rsilroad route. This took him to Toledo, where he opened s news depot, and everything he touched turned to money. By the time he wss 18 he conceived the idea of starling a sbow, and he had the money with which to do it. The. first attempt was a minstrel show aud was a success. He made a number of brilliant plunges, and then was brought up with such s round tbrn that he made a vol untary assignment for the benefit of his creditors. His liabilities were in the neighborhood of l,00u,ikJU. He waa sold ont for f 1,100,000 snd was elt 1400,000 in debt. I'ndismsyed by the failure he at once organised Haverly a Mastodon minstrel., of nnheard of numbers and talent, and started out to contjoer the world anew. He lost his monev through his tierce determintion to beat the "game" in Wall atnet and on the Chicago Hoard of Trade. By his own admissions ho had been seven times rich and had lost seven goodly fortunes. He was a man of medium height, gray hair and twinkling gray eyes. He had an inveterate paasion l ir games of chance, and when fsr from the acene ol giant vpeculatlon would seek oat the higgeet game of poker in time ba met a high-roller, who admit- le.i tbat he waa fond of poker. Haver ly bluehiuglv ooufeaaeda similar pred ilection. Hut the haughty stranger aaid tbal be did not think Haverly's game wa up to hi vtanaara in the matter of .takes "I'll tell you what we'll do," aaid Haverly, "we'll lake $6000 apiece and boy twenty chip. Ttieu we can play just one gsme of frees out for the whole sum." Tlie southerner was "gsme," snd in twenty-three minutes Hsverly had the whole stakes in bis inside pocket. Haverlv was always furiously active and he soon put out "Michael Htro gofl," Wi.iow liedotl" and "The Ml ver King." theu he organised the Chun 1, Choir Opers company, "Haver ly's Madrigal Hoys, the Juveulle Op era company and the Aiiiericau-hurnp-enn minstrels. About this time Kugene t ield wrote a iweui about Haverly, Iroui which the following atansa is taken: How grand you looked, Jack Haverly, a marching down the street A diamond ou your boeom, patent leathers on your feet Your sturdy, cruly mustache, a warm aggressive hue. hveemed to advertise the c 1 rcuinslam thst there are no tlie on you , l-i ret came the baud, aud then you came, and next your famous Irou Aud last of all wa youngster, wit wild, hilarious whoop, Jf'or it couldn't be expected tbst youuklt should be dumb In tb rapture of the trumpet and big baa drum !
