W. K. l'ot w ine's article in your issue of August nil your cuminuntH, induce me to re mark that neither side ot the contro versy has vet touched the core. As sum I nr. the intrinsic merits m tin Sabbath romaiiilmenta (which hvi hern heretolore mainly overb okeil. in the authoritative controversies on the subject, it ih a simple chronological ami aHtrouomical tact that there m-vei was anil never could be anv particular .jt le-lglled eXieptlllL' -1- the appoint tneiit ol sticli a "lav in anv country or locality is necessary to subserve the purpose- of a seventh da rest, which is the only end for which the com niandment could have been issued When it ih Sunday noon on thin coast tt is about midnight the opening of Monday at Jerusalem, am) when evening Clllirch goern here are closing their -Hilda, devotion, the -.,uall pu.ua Hritons are preparimt to begin their week's work, at which Uiiasians are already actively engaged. Again: The annual revolution of the earth around the sun persistently tiety any attempt m run them into even weeks, the iterim! being 3tV days, .1 Hours, etc. Hence, since the time at which the; ten eoiiimaudments are assumed to have lieen promulgated inert- have leen repeated read iistim-ii ( - of the calendar aud dropping ot days to "even up" which have rendered the supposition that there has been an un interrupted track kepi ever -in -e that event of anv "seventh days" or "first days" aiSAolutely idiotic. Vet the whole seventh day contruverav rests uiMiit the haselesH assumption that mere ua neen -urn a record, Which IS not only false as a mutter of fact, but clearly impossihb . Hut now we come to a practical, in dustrial, reasonable view ot the subject. It is probable that the Israelite owe their mental and physical superiority to their belief in the religious duty of resting one day in seven aud that the British ami American peoples have similarly acquired a suiieriority over some nationalities of the Kuropeau continent who are lax in that regard. The inhabitant of countries where there i no well defined rest day, or any rest day at all an- certainly infer ior in all that make life worth living to those who recognue such a day, other things being espial, of course. I do not assume that to he the only fac tor in such coni'iariHons. but it is a very large one. If there coiiid be more FlGPRUNE Cereevl Requires less sugar than tea, coffee, or any othoj cereal coffee, the wholesome fruit sugar contained in figs and prunes largely supplying this need It is the verdict of every housewife that FlGPRUNE is the most economical and nutritious of anv cereal coffee. Boil from 5 to 10 minutes only. ALL QKOCERS SELL FlGPRUNE CEREAL 1 , Ml 'lay alii! nIi'iNm liollfh Ihrollgh the abolition of privilege's Hnd the en- ! actment of equal rights to the earth, people under those improved condi tion would soon surpass ail other peo ples in morals, brains and plivsiuiie. The sabbath institution was nu In III I step along that line of development. The law that is tlwavs best lis nut little power 10 project the BITOH And Mm cnnieH the question, "Why keep out day more than another as a day of rest' Why compel by law stores to close?" The anwer aloiifc your lines would tie clear enough if a date was entirely a fartnini! ami not al all a business community If every family was "under its own vine tnr liif-tree ami none to make him afraid It would he very desirable were there even an approximation to such n con dition; but there ia not, and probably will not be for some generations. The civilized man is estentlallv commer cial, and in order that nearly all may enjov a day of rest there must be method as to the day selected. Sun day happens to be the current usaite, anil answers as well as any other day, subserving the greatest onven lenee oj the greatest number, which won hi be much less the case were say I ueda selected. If anybody werV to observe any day he chose and large numbers chose half a dozen different tlav. il w ild confuse and almost paralyze all business and manufactures. Now lei ill see how the "freedom" idea 1- relatetl to Sunday observant t Here is a village with twenty stores all selling the same goods, substantially. They employ collectively eighty clerks, etc, v4 1-iili makes, with the proprie tors, one hundred ersnns. All of them want a rest of one day In seven, as the amount of aggregate business done in seven days would not he ser iously lessened if done in six by unan imous consent. So they all agree to close on Sunday with one exepetion, and he would like to close, too. hut he sees a chance (or snatching a litlte extra hstnness at the cost of the other. Ho he keeps open, and in the llaajnd exercise of his "freedom " he compels n others to work who don't want to! And thai is probably what is the matter, more (ban religious scruples, with "the case cited" N ichols of Col lege Place. Finally, I advocate a seventh day rest, not on religions, hut secular and humanitarv grounds, a applied to business and manufacturing. If the end could be reached by appeals to conscience, common sense ami human ity rather than to law also, it would he laitter. Kill if there is anv form of life to which legal coerci. n should he applied, it is in support of the rights of lalsir as emlsslictl in the still more important question ol tin- rights to leisure, rest, ami recreation. I would not prescribe the form which that leisure should take; therein each should be his own best judge. It niav he iii hearing sermons or attending scientllc lectures and the two may be come one be lore many years or in rambling in the wood or hill- or boating nn the waters; hut there should he one day in seven devote.
