The ratio for the nation as u whole tu 1939 was one vehicle for every four persons. Begislratlon of light delivery trucks for 1940 totuled 31,547 ve hicles un increase of «.2« per cent over I93U while trucks totaled 38,- 749, un increase of 5.41 per cent. Corresponding with the total mo tor vehicle registration increase of 0.54 per cent in 1940, was the in crease in gasoline consumption in this state, Snell’s figures disclosed. 'Iliere was an increase of 7.4 per cent in the umount of gusoline con sumed in the slate, the gallonage for 1940 amounting to 200,121,730 compared to 241,109.975 in 1939. For these reasons the Ministry proposes, in the future, to send all requests for medical and nursing personnel, hos pitals and hispital equipment and medical and surgical equipment and supplies through the British Bed Cross to the American Bed Cross. Consequently, from this date, no re quests for these kinds of aid shall he forwarded to any other Amer ican organization. Furthermore, of fers of American aid which fall within the above defined limits will he referred by the Ministry thru the British Bed Cross to the Amer ican Bed Cross for consideration and approval. "You will, of course, appreciate that there exist current .and pre viously accepted commitments be tween the Ministry and other A- merican organizations which can not he withdrawn. It is our inten tion Io complete our existing com mitments with these organizations insofar as they do not conflict with the above stated position. “I am anxious further to empha size that no request will be put for ward by the Ministry that is not a request to meet a real need and to make up deficiencies whether of personnel or material which either cannot he met at all or where, as is the ease of surgical instruments, production is extremely slow. “I trust the procedure 1 have outlined is one that w»H ’"eel with D.e concurrence of the American Bed Cross, but I am anxious to say that a clear and simple procedure should he adopted, it would not be right that I should close this letter without expressing our most sincere and warm appreciation to the A- mcrican Bed Cross for the generous assistance it has afforded us in the past and for its equally generous offer to continue to help." Mr. Davis pointed out that it has been the policy of the Amerilan Bed Cross from the day war was declared to ship only those medical and surgical supplies which have icen specifically requested or clear 'd in advance with the British Red Tross through the American Red 'ross Committee in London. All ¡uch supplies have been new artic les. The same applies to civilian clothing and other relief supplies for civilian victims, which the A- inerican Red Cross distributes thru the Women’s Voluntary Service of Great Britain. Willamette Student* Favor Aid To Great Britain Results of the poll taken recently by the Collegian, official student publication, showed that Willamet te students are in favor of conscrip tion and in amending the Johnson act to allow Ioans to England, it was revealed this week. The 222 men and women who answered the poll's questions gave a variety of answers on the question of where the Republican party’s weakness lies. The poll found 42 per cent of the students in favor of the existing conscription act, while 31 per cent wished to have the act amended to require one year compulsory mili tary training upon finishing high school.
