It was Ihe fourth suicide in this •ounty in the last nineteen days. Last Thursday his wife filed suit for divorce, alleg- ng cruelly as grounds. This, accord ing Io the authorities, heightened his despondency and he has been m iler the care of a brother for several days. Friends ami neigh bors had i ndeavored to cheer him jp , and Saturday it was felt that tie was m a cheerful frame of mind. Sunday rfiernoon he went to the home of his brother and appeared cheerful. After a few minutes of conversation he left $15 to be de livered to his eldest son. and left with the remark: * “I ’m all through.” No significance was attached io the word.-., ag Neathamer appeared in a better frame of mind than for several days A short time after his departure, a shot was heard, and Neathamer was found mortally »-minded lying in a fence corner w ith a .22 calibre pistol by his side. Asked for a rea son by neighbors, Neathamer, ac cording to the state police replied: “I just bail to do it. I couldn’t stand ii any longer.” The stricken man was rushed to a Grants Pass hospital, where an emergency operation was perform ed. Death tame about eight hours after the shot was fired. Ray Toft, 54, and a resident of Jackson county for the past 40 years, committed suicide at his home in Jacksonville shortly before 3 o'clock lest Thursday afternoon. Poor hcallii and financial reverses were given by his fam ily as pos sible causes of tha act. Tot. according to Ihe officers placed several small, covered bat tery wires about his neck, and w ith a chair rung as a tourniquet he choked himself to death. Toft, ac cording to his family, had been left alone that afternoon, and had gone Io the basement of his house where he got the w ire and chair rung. He was found in his own bedroom, and had been dead about 15 min utes when he was found. Toft is well known in Jackson county, having been in Ihe money lending business for many years. According to his family he has threatened suicide several times lately and had been in ill health for some tune because of w orry over financial matters. Only re cently he attempted to sell a crypt that he owned in Ihe mausoleum in Medford, on the plea that he need ed money. Toft's body was discovered by Mrs. Olive O’Conner, T o ft’s house keeper. According to T o ft’s friends, te and his wife had been separated for some time, and his sister has been living w ith him in Jackson ville, in a home he acquired about two years ego. Coroner Conger, Sheriff Jennings and the state police were summon ed, and no inquest was held. Every indication, they said, pointed to wards suicide. T o ft’s father, J. E. Toft, and a sister, live in Medford. Word was received here by rela tives of the birlh of a daughter, Joy Ann, on October 0 to M r. and Mrs. Rount of Santa Monica, Calif.
