Some reports would indicate that inter est oyer the county, and action taken by many organiza tions in petitioning the court for tax reductions was wholh unnecessary, and that proposals made by such bodies were ridiculous and immaterial. Well, the 28.7 per cent cut—more than one-fourth the entire budget, as com pared with last year—means something. .And we’re not s but what organized effort had its share in cutting the ex penses, all inferences to the contrary notwithstanding. Why Not Take Care of a Few PRESENT Needs? The northern part of the state is all upset about an extravagant program for the widening of the highway be tween the state capital and Portland. "Building for the future" is a phrase that is being used promiscuously hv supporters of the program, who want a 60-foot pavement, and a ioo-foot right-of-way. People who drive the Ore gon City-Salem route, will readily agree that at times tra f fic is congested, and that a wider highway is advisable. However, state tax monies can only be spread so far, and there is much important roaid work to be done over the entire state. Why plunge into a program "for the future” on one fifty-mile stretch in the state, when there are many miles of tortuous, winding roads of main highways that are important as feeders to markets and the commercial and industrial interests of the state, that have not even been prepared for the needs of the present?
