Special Rate of $2 per Ton
Enables Plant to Compete;
Last Obstacle Now Passed
SALEM, Or., June 17.—The State Railroad Commission today
granted the application of Southern Pacific Railroad Company
for a low rate from Gold Hill to Portland, and its action is des
tined to serve as a great stimulus to the cement industry, for the
announcement is made by J. C. Burch, president of the Beaver-
Portland Cement Company, that it will enable that firm to com
pete with California concerns, and the company will install a
$100,000 plant at Gold Hill. Thecompany already has the capital
to install the plant, and action along th at line hinged on securing
a rate equal to the low water rate enjoyed by the California in
dustry.
D. W. Reidle, of Green, contemplates installing a plant at that
place, and the application for the Gold Hill rate was granted on
condition that the railroad company would grant him a rate of
$1.75 a ton to Portland, if he installed his p la n t The rate from
Gold Hill to Portland is fixed at $2 a ton.
