Thursday, Dec. 8. The wheat market in hnglanu dropped a week ago, rovivnd on Saturday, and delined again since then, to that prices hero aro nomi sally $1 574 l,er cental, but it is understood that when tho prico drops below SI CO trans actions arc at a stand still. The last charter -was a week or more ago, ship James Wright, for 77s tld, U, K. No iron ships aro known to bave been charteitd latoly, but the Anno Vain is reported to have been chartered at the same figure. Since depression in prices 75s would bu considered a fair fieight for an iron ship. An exporter tolls us that he had word Wednesday of a cargo in a wooden ship, just loaded, sold for Cls 0J per quarter of 500 lbs. A cargo that was sold a mouth ago at 5Us per quarter, was lately resold at 52s 3d, which netted a loss to tho speculator of $7,000 on that cargo, so producers can hoc tint it is not altogether a otio sided thing speculating in wheat. Since wheat is being handled and tieely ahipptd, and quantities in warehouse are understood, a lower estimate is put on the total surplus. Wo hao plait il tho probable suiplus at 300,000 tour, while other journals have claimed at least 320,000 tons, but that quantity is doubted. Leaving out shipirints to Noi th I'.iciliu ports and coastwise, the latest tiuuiiug wo liso seen places tho total Columbia river surplus at 255,000 tons, or 8,500,000 hualnls. The quantity that has aluady buiii shipped of this is 60,000 tons sent foieigu, mid 20,000 tons to San Francisco. Tho touuuge in the river has capacity of 35,000 tons, making tut d of 135, 000 tons provided for. it is vstiuutt'd that famiir- hold olio-thud of the surplus untold, both of l-istem mid Western louuties, and that fully half of the suiplus is prow Jul for by the shipments nude, mid tonnage at band, Tluro nro SO.OoO. or 8,500 shoit tons capacity known to be on the way, and 10,000 tons mora will lie t-ut by steam to San I'rauoUco, which Kaves, say 20,000 tmis unpiowded for, with probability that of this amount even half will uover be shipped, so the probable short age of freighting capacity is merely nominal. If w e accept this as a rvatomihle catculuiou, there is no need to worry about shipping. At the present timu there is a great deal of wheat in tight in tl a Kttteru markets, but nouu moving. It Is supposed to have been bought up by speculators, w ho hold most of the avaiUble surplus, ami will try to keep it anil force a ri.e. The Kuropcaii market is at present fully supplied with homo dtlivcrica, l'ricts are better than last ) ear and prodii' cers are realiilug on that account. 'Hie d line has surprised old dealers but has no doubt bu .atuttxt by free talis of home pro. ducts, and an advance may le expected when those home supplies begin to run th rU The bread hi if s trade it proverbially dull during tho holidays aud we need nut expect any dc Med. improvement mini after Ne Years, ui lets it comes immediately. Liverpool spot yuiet nut steady. Ban Francisco Markets. (8. K. Coimnertlat Herald Dec. 1.) Tho month of November closed upon a dull and declining wheat market. For the past fortnight comparatively few purchases were made at the extreme prices demanded by the large larin holding interest. The efforts of the Grangers to advance arbitrarily tho market to SI. 75 gt- f ctl proved eminently aoortive.and all this timo exporters wterc loading their ships with alacrity, as during tho month of November soventy-soven ships were cleared for Europo with hreadstuffs, showing conclu sively that shippers provided against the .com bination of farmers. The present spot price of wheat is now ten cents l ctl below tho highest rate of the season, while the Liverpool piico has declined in even a greater ratio. Freights, too, have tumbled from 80s82s Od down to G5s70s for wood and iron direct. Within the past three days large additions have been made to our wheat fleet, and the disengaged vessels augmented not a little. Grain freights now favor the exporter quota ble at 0570s for wood and iron respectively to a diiect poit. Details as below. Tho fleet in sight to arrive within the next five months is reduced to 285,000 registered tons, against 185,000 same date last year, and 135,000 in 1879. A daily exchange says: Wheat Tho cloving week of November has not been notedforany degree of activity, quite tho contrary, exporters seemingly having large reserve stocks, upon which they draw ail lim Hum. A fleet of more than 70 ships has been loaded with wheat during November, yet leaving a largo number of ships upon the berth Prices have fallen oil at least 100 t' ctl during the month, and at tho close export ers found no diflculty in procuring all the wheat they wanted for the dispitch of vessels loading. The turn downwards in the Liver pool market has been a surprise to many in the business, not looking for a dculino with the light shipments making from the Atlantic pons, for at last advices it i-eeniB that tho wheat crops of the United Kingdom were proving better than was feared tarly in the season. Since our last weekly refrrenco light rains have fallen, with every indication of a more liberal supply as wo write. Agriculturists generally are looking forward with confidence to another fruitful year, and are preparing for 'mother largo wheal phmt. Fruit growers and vine planters are gioatlv extending their or chards and vineyaids. A Bl Pair I The other day Mr. Seth Lonellin, of Mil waukee, brought into our office a pair of curi osities. The first was a Pound pear which only weighed 3J pounds, or one pear which nearly equaled two pair of pound pears. It appears quite big to us, and do not know of over having seen a bigger one. The other was a carrot weiehing 7 J. pounds without trim mings. The carrot can be said to verv closely resemble the human body both in shape snd from a Darw inian point of view. It has a long tail. This is, no doubt, to the yes of our extreme Eastern readeis, a big tale but it is the truth. A Largo Music Store.
