Tliu Economist of tliu 'JStli says: It is rarely tho country witnesses such strango somer saults ns tha wool mid oolcu interests havo been enacting recently. After six years of bad tradu and severe losies depression in nil its worst nspects held dominion over trade, nml n Hi.iiul'i of low prices was ciiliiidently antici pated ou'ii among wiNibgrowers. Hut suit dculy tlio trade everywhere discover that their supplies have run out, and immediately n speculative spirit to obtain fresh supplies seizes tliu mind of n great number of peoplo both In nml out of trade. It docs not take long to run prices up W" 40 per cent., for tho higher they go tho moro anxious somo peoplo nro bent upon securing supplies, in tho hopo of icalizing lotllid prollts, while pro. iluccis beenmo nlarmcd that they cannot secure tlio supplies necessary to run their mills. During nil this excitement wo warned tliu trade of tliu danger of carrying prices bo yoml their limits, for experience hod con vinced us that after tho first cxcitcrient wns over n lull would ensue, nml then n reaction may set In that would ho cry injurious to nil interests. There is evidently moro of n disposition to icnliro 011 wools held nlsivu their intrinsic worth nml sales havo been elVected at ouo to two rents below tho asking tates of a weok ngo. This is regarded m n weakness of tho market, but in our opinion Is rather nn equalizing of prices, nml then1 must bu a further depreciation In tho vnhio of tho cer tain clashes of heavy wools nlludcd to, or tho better wools must euhanco still further in value. It seems to bo pietty generally ngieed liov that nil kinds of wool havo reached higher prices than manufacturers nro warranted in paying, and mi this account theiu is moro of disjiositiou to realize than to carry stock. Theiu is n weakness manifest hero which betrays tho eoutideiico of specula tori in futuro values, When manufacturers atturo us that their good nro now in tho hands of retail houses, nml that they cannot obtain any money on their sales before the llrt of .(miliary next, there is manillestly mimetliing out of joint, mid wo do not think it prudent to pilu men the last hair uihih tho camel's back lest it may sever it. liood light shrink wools do not share in the weakness nf tliu he.ny classes, nml fur nil choico nml select descriptions tho market it ns firm ns ever. HAN HIlM'lil'O Wlllll. lAUKi:r. Tho San Francisco Commercial Herald of July lllth, sayat Stocks, to-day, am made up I'hiilly of arrival, during tho last month, mid nro either com Kited of Oregon or Northern woott, Avetagu wools opened nt 111 cents for dusty nml unsightly parcels, and 1,1 cents for bright lots in good condition. These prices advanced to IS and 20 cents respeetnely. Ordinary Southern wools of fair staple, but having considerable bur, oicmd nt 12 cents; good staple parcel at III cents, but wero atterunrds taken nt 1(1 to IS cents. Most of tho long stapled,, dusty wools, brought from III to I A cents. Choice wools began to nnio early in May, sales were nmdo nt IS to 20 cents, but under eager compi tition mhaiieed rapidly to 27 cents, nml for some fancy lots, oveu higher rates wero obtained, Oiegou wools liegan to arrive earlier than during nuy previous season; most of the leceipts are pattern, Mhich nro in much superior condition to these in former cars. Tho staple is stronger, there is less extremely coaisc, frowsy wool, and moro freedom from nlknli. The market opened nt 20 cents for gotxl, nml 22 cent for choice, but rapidly advanced to 22 ami 2.1J ceuts, Oniug to largo receipts and small demand, prices havo tecoded to ucirly opening rates, Stocks of these uru now largo, nml nro increasing, but ns yet holders aro not inclined to meet buyers, Tho receipts of alley w ool aro too small to afford it reliable opiuion at to its character. Sales have been made at 20 to 27 cents for fair wools. Tho number of bags received during the last six moutlis, is larger than in 1S7S. Tho amount of wool in tho couutry to come forward, is less than lost year, so that the production of spring wool will probably not lo ns much as last year, although early in tho season an oxcen was cxpoctod, Freights by rail, during most of the season, hare been 2J cents per pound, and by sailing u-cs, one cent. Sailiug vessels have taken moro than double the ipuautity they took last year. .Manufacturers are tho largest shippers by this ivute, a comparatively small amount going to dealers.
