O. tju'.llb City U waUas some Jmrrove- tnent, and your very excellent correspondent at this plnca (Dr. F. S. Matlosou) and others oro working with n hearty good will for tho best Interests of tho people of this region. A magnificent river ami rich soil nre two items at least to commend this plaeo. I will say more of the Coqullle country in another letter. Every thine; here is regulated by tho tldo except tho rain and school tho first is com ing all tho time and tho second commences whenever Prof. Wolford iIurs tho bell. Ccqullle City can boast of a hotel that can't bo boat in the State. I tio&iro to recom mend the "Olive House" to all my friends who como this way. Another hottso here the "Robinson," also bears a goodnamo. Empire City, Oct. 31, 1S7G, On the 'morning of tho ESthVinst., I bade Bro.L.D. Wolford, and my new made ac tiuaintancos of Coqullle City, good bye, and started for other Holds of labor. A sixteen mile rido during which timo I enjoyed a "generous soaking" from n "gentlo shower" brought me back to Sumner, where I was to "hang up" until the morning nud then to take 15ro. Bunnell's row boat down Catching bloiigu for Marahtteld. "Using ralnv and having nothing else to do" we 'called a special meeting of Houiowood Lodge, and iuitintod two persons, Reuben Fanton and wife, formerly from Canetnali. They will mako good members . I then instructed tho Lodge in the deg-ees. Tho meeting was a pleasant'one, and the Lodgo piotnlsc-sgood work. On Monday evening wo had another pub lic totnperanco meotitignt Marehfiold, which wau well attended. Marshlleld Lodgo un der tho management of such energetic work ers as Bros. Crain, Tuppor, Monroo, Fuller, Hacker, and Sislcta Butnor, Hacker, Hall, Canliold, Sarah aud Bessie Dunbar, Mc Knlghl and a number of others Is sute to give a good Recount of its sell. I have appointed Bro. J. P. Tupper a Dis trict Deputy for this county. At Marshdold, I met my friends J. L. Johnson and wife, formerly fiom Frpueu Prairio. They are getting along finely. Their foator daughter, Ollie Ross, Is with thorn. Ollie is a gonial intelligent iady. I met also W. I. Henderson, (brother of Sister McClung, our present Grand Coun.) He crime up ironi California on tho fcteamer Empire on her last trip. "Irve" is married again. He intends locating at Utter City. During the past week I havo organized three Lodges in this county. Had I timo to remain I could organize others, but there are bo mauy Lodges In other localities to visit thatlrautt leave this field and attend to thatwerk. I leave here for Gardner on to morrow if tho "sun does not come out too strong." Empire City is dull in fact it is dead. Instead of tho old motto "Wtstward the star of Empire takes its ay," we should write "downward tho city of Empire makes its way." ScoxTsnuRO, Nov. 8. 1870, En. Fabmer: Laurel Lodge, No. 178, comes to the front again to actively battle for our cause. It bad held ncT" meetings for soveral months, but last niht atlor a public locturo we got n number of the old members together aud mustered in Ms now ones and the Lodgo starts out again with a good membership and an eneouragiug prospect. The officors chosen and installed are as follows: W. E. Palmer, W.O.T.; James Butler, R.H.S.; Edith Palmer, L.H.S.; Josie Parrott, W.V.T.; P. P. Palmor, (oue of the most determined temperance men in the State) W.S ; Allle Palmer, W.A.S.; Jennie P.ilmer, W.F.S.J Isabel Ozonlf, W.T.; Huldah Hedileu, W.O.j Irotie Burnotto. W. M.; Mary Palmor, W.D.M.; Elmer Palmor, W.I. G.j Ben Bttllor, W.O.G.j Obed C. But ler, P.W.C.T.; and P. P. Palmer, L.D. Among tho new members tokon Into thin Lodgo I noto tho names of my young Iriond Will Palmer and wife, ((otmerly Jennio Codtes) aud Joslo Parrott, each of whom wero of tho etorau brigade of No. 5 at Roioburg. Will Pjlmcr and his lather nre engaged in merchandising burp aud nro doing a good business. Sislbr Joslo Parrult, is teaching, r.nd is giving couiplotofcalislnclion. Seottfcburg Is improving pome, and as much of the travol (or Coos Bay will leave tbo rallrotd at Drains, and come this wayi itnmy ng.jln become qui to a placo. Ono of tbeiicedaof the placo at tliMtlmo Is a good hotel or at least a hotol under better manage ment than the c-no now tboro--especially ono not entirely wedded to tho whiskey riug. I hoar that tho old iossil who keeps thin house positively itfusod to allow tha fimily to attend a temperance lecturo wtlch was loss tlntti twenty steps nv,-ay. Tho Lodg3 at this place I fortunato indeed in having In its membership such earnest workers as Sisters Or.ontV, Palmer, Hedden, and Bro. Palmor, Obed C. and James But ler, aud I fdol suto will give a goodgreport of lis work. Lettersjust received from W. II. O'Don aid, DIst. Dsn. Jnr MuUnnraiU county, C. H.
