HunnAttn, Sept. 17, 1S70, En, FAioinR: I was much surprised and as greatly rejoiced upon visitluc Marlon Lodge No. 43 (located here) to llnd it one of the most prosperous and well conducted Lodges In the State, lruly the temperance people in ana around this pleasant little vil lago are doing a noble work. I am told that themeotings have been largely attended every Saturday night, notwithstanding the busy harvest season and that recruits are being constantly received. Not a meeting so lar this term without an Initiation. That gallant champion of temperance, Rev. G. W. Dimick, is tilling the chair of W.C.T., this term. Sister llovonden is W. V.T. and Bro. Grim, W.S. All the ofUcers are prompt aud efficient. Bro. S. M. Hatch Is Lodge Deputy, and is an active earnest worker, and to his energy U due much of tho prosperity oftho Lodgo. Among other active members I would mention the names of Sisters Jones, Sarah Garrett. Gleason, Scott, Harris, Hussell and Leslie with Bros. Russel, Henstls, Thomas Dimick, Grim and many others whose names I have not space to mention. To-day we held a public temporauce meetiug in the JI. n. Church which was well nttended. In hasto, W. IX. No. 41 has some of the best temperance workers in its ranks that are to be found in the State. Death of Mrs. Downing. We l egret to have to record tho death of Mrs. Temperance Downing, wife of Hon. John Downing and sister of G. W. Hunt, of the Waldo Hills, who died at her home on Saturday evening Sept. 10, and was buried Monday afternoon Sept. 18. It is true that death came as a wolcomoreltef from protract ed disease and great sufleriuo;: alia was arm ed with an earnest fa'th in her Redeemer that robbed death of all his terrors and went to hor death with a calm consciousness that showed porfoct trust, and dying gave her last adious to oach loved one as if she was going on a not distant journey. She possess ed those qualities that made her life valuable to all who knew her and endeared her great ly to those who knew her best, and leaves a pleasant memory behind her attestod by the multitude of those who paid the last mourn ful honors to the friend they had lost. The family have the sympathy of all who know them In this sad hour of their boroavemont. Since writing the foregoiug notice of Mrs. Downiug's death, we havo recoived the fol lowing obituary notice. Diun. Of cancer, Sept. l(i, 1870, Temper ance Downing, wile of John Downing. The deceased united with the Christian church four years ago; she calmly stepped under the yoke and joined tho happy band of christian workers and has ever lived true to her sacred promise in walking close to her Savior in all that was true, noble and pure, thus recording one more exemplary lilo In truth, virtue and ploty. A short time before tjhe died sho called her family to her bedside aud one by one she bado them good bye. No one had a larger share ol friends. No one was more worthy of friendship. While her death is not atur prise, or shock, it will be none the less sincerely mourned here where she was so well known. A consistent Christian and devoted mother has passed from the pains and troubles of this life to enter upon the bright inheritance prepared for the people of God. It Is due to her that we ever pay our highest and purest tributes in memory of her never tiring devotion, tendernesu of heart, Ktnadlnets of mind aud purity ol her whole beisg as a loving wife and kind sinter.
