Editor: As I intend spondlng a few days in obtaining specimens of our native nrasses nnd the flora of East ern Oregon, ns a part of our State ex hibit at the coining Centennial in " '70," permit mo to solicit the assistance and co-operation of ladies and gentlemen who can, by combining pleasure, profit able employment and tacful at tidy, ma terially assist in making a success of so laudable an undertaking. This depart ment, placed In chargo of Dr. E. It. Geary, of Albany, can, by a little assist ance from individuals in various locali ties who love to gather rare plants and wild Mowers, be made not only useful and instructive to contributors, butalo in the Horn of the Centennial Exhibi tion a lasting credit to our State. The process of preserving flowers, leaves and cuttings, by pressing them between the leaves of books, thick paper orcard board, is familiar to most of us, and with trilling expense and a little outlay of time tho native leaves, flowers, herbs and plants of our State can be ob tained, scientifically arranged and class ified, and made tho study of scholars and botanists from all parts of the world. Our forns, lichens and mosses aro worthy tho careful attention of the amateur naturalist and deserve a prom inent pace In tho collection, All cases or packages of specimens designed for tho exhibition forwarded to our address at Portland, or to C. E. DuIJoIs, of the samo place, w ill receive tho best of care, and, after being passed upon by tho State Centennial advisory Ixiarri, will bo forwarded with other ar ticles to Philadelphia and placed on ex hibition in tho Oregon department in the namo of tho donor. Many of the older States arc already offering .liberal premiums for articles of meiit to bo passed upon and forward ed to Philadelphia by their State Cen tennial boauls, and although our dis play will depend upon individual effort, still wo wo liopo it will bo made none the less creditablo to tho State. Spaco has been secured in tho pavil ions and every arrangement possible to bo made has been completed, and it Bhall not bo our fault if Oicgon is not as well lepiesentcd in her natural rc bouices in this great exposition as any of her sister States.
