January 13, 2021 The Skanner Portland & Seattle Page 3 Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Skanner Foundation’s 35th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast Goes Virtual The event will stream on Youtube, and features special addresses from our elected official and entertainment by local musical talent The Skanner News T he Skanner Founda- tion’s 35th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast will take place online from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. next Monday, January 18, 2021. This year we cannot join together in person because of the corona- virus pandemic. But we invite you to bring your own breakfast and join us online from our own homes to enjoy our usu- al full program of enter- tainment and inspira- tion. As always we will be offering you a mix of mu- sic, song and inspiration- al speakers. Our keynote speaker will be General Arthur T. Dean, executive chair- man of the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) Board of Directors. Gen- eral Dean will speak on health care a topic that we are sure you will agree is more timely than ever. And during this tu- multuous time for our nation we will hear from Sen. Jeff Merkley and Sen. Ron Wyden who are serving Oregonians in the U.S. Congress. We look forward to hearing their insights into the state of our nation. Oregon Gov. Kate Brown and Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler will also be joining us to share their thoughts on events closer to home. And Nate McCoy, the executive director of the Oregon Chapter of the National Association of Minority Contractors, will give us his perspective on how our economy is treating small business people. Join us in song as we “Lift Ev’ry Voice” in the Black National Anthem. And sit back and be en- tertained by the fabulous Portland singer/song- writer Tahirah Memory, and jazz musician Mike Phillips. Join us to celebrate our journey toward Dr King’s Dream of an equal and just America and to bring it a little closer through supporting the dreams of our students. The Skanner Foun- dation couldn’t do this without our sponsors so we hope you’ll join us in thanking them with a round of applause. This year they include: Ore- gon Lottery, PGE, Pros- per Portland, *RALI Ore- gon, Providence Health, Pepsi, the U.S. Forest Service, Chenoweth Law Group, Safeway, the Uni- versity of Oregon, the City of Portland, Metro, Wells Fargo, HomeFor- ward, Turner Construc- tion, Pacific Power,Enter- prise Holding, Oregon Alliance of Clinical Re- search, Meyers Memori- al and Kaiser Permanen- te. As always your hosts will be Bernie, Bobbie and Jerry Foster. Our theme this year is “Changes Require Sacri- fice”. During his lifetime Dr King sacrificed his safety, his time and the comforts of family life. And in 1968 his life was taken from him- the ul- timate sacrifice. We’ll be looking at the meaning of his dream for each of us as we celebrate those who sacrifice so all of us can live in freedom and equality. This year’s breakfast will be unlike any other, but it will bring us to- gether as a united com- munity as it always has done.
