On Easter Sunday, April 1, the theme for the day is “Jesus is the Light of the World”. Beginning at 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., the Sunrise Service commences with the Annual Resurrection Proclamation. At 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., join family and friends at the free community Annual Brotherhood Union Sunday Easter Brunch in the Dr. & Mrs. O. B. Williams Fellowship Hall; reservations are required (503) 282-9496. At 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., the 74th Annual Sunday School Program starts, a theatrical depiction entitled the “The Lord Supper” with cast members from the church and community. At 10:45 a.m., the Annual Family & Friends Easter Sunday Worship and Communion Service begin, the Pastor J.W. Matt Hennessee will deliver the morning Easter message of the season. The Junior Angel Children’s Easter Chorale will render music selections, along with the Easter Gospel Mass Choir and the High Praise Dance Team also scheduled to appear. Parking is available at the Legacy Emanuel Parking Lot located at North Monroe and Vancouver Avenue. Portland News Briefs Portland Residents Invited to Gather in Annual Public Prayer March 30 St. Charles Catholic Church welcomes Portland res- idents to gather in an annual public prayer to recall the pain and suffering of Jesus in connection with the pain and suffering of the many living in Portland to- day. The walk will begin with at Ainsworth United Church of Christ with an opening service led by Rev. Cecil Prescod. Participants will then walk to St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, making 14 stops along the way. Each stop will connect part of Jesus’ walk to a social injustice that our communities face today. Gun violence, police accountability, sexual assault, racism, housing, immigration and HIV are some of the issues that will be addressed. Most sta- tions will approach the issue through a personal sto- ry of someone from the community. All Portland residents are invited, and people with children are especially encouraged to attend. There will be a collection taken, proceeds of which will be donated to Don’t Shoot PDX. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 4 50TH COMMEMORATION OF MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. ASSAS- SINATION: Join us for this family oriented, non-violent march. Theme is “Marching Toward The Beloved Community For Justice, Peace and Elimination Of Poverty.” 5 p.m., Gather at the Japanese American Historical Plaza, NW Naito Parkway at NW Davis St. See Community Calendar on page 5 June Key Delta Community Center to Host Candidates Forum for City Council Position 3 Delta Sigma Sorority Inc. is sponsoring a candi- dates’ forum for City Council, Position 3, at 6 p.m. April 11, at the June Key Community Center, 5940 N. Albina Ave. Invited candidates are: Jo Ann Hardesty, Loretta Smith, Andrea Valderrama, Felicia Williams, and Stuart Emmons. Lew Humble will moderate the dis- cussion. The public is invited and refreshments will be provided. MJF Grants Help Fund Music in Montavilla Schools Attendance and ticket revenue for the 2017 Monta- villa Jazz Festival were at the highest levels in our the festival’s history. The boost in ticket revenue means that this year MJF’s small grants program, the Monta- villa Schools Music Fund, is granting a total of $2,500 to our four neighborhood public schools: Bridger, Creative Science, Harrison Park, and Vestal. Montavilla Jazz Festival works closely with each school to make sure the grant application process sim- ple and straightforward. This year’s grant awardees will be announced in April.
