As Dr. Wal- ters wrote in his book, “White Nationalism, Black Interests: Conser- vative Public Policy and the Black Community”: “Within American soci- ety, which includes con- tending social groups, there exists a balance of power that conforms to that society’s racial com- position.” This balance must conform to the normal distribution of power, if society is to remain in equilibrium. President Obama, in the minds of a lot of people became an indicator that the normal distribution of power is askew and is in jeop- ardy. According to the Pew Research Center, 67 percent of non-college Whites backed Trump, compared with just 28% who supported Clinton, hence his statement “I love the uneducated.” Trump won Whites with a college degree 49% to 45%. The CBS Exit Poll data found that 54 per cent of White women voted for Trump. Trump also won among White, non-college women 62 to 34 percent and White college-educated men, 54 to 39 percent. This begs the question, for as nau- seating as Hillary Clin- ton was to a lot of people, how could white-women vote for a shallow misog- ynist who called women pigs and said about Car- ly Fiorina “Look at that face…Would anyone vote for that? Can you imag- ine that the face of our next president?” And we know about his ref- erence to women’s’ gen- italia and he also objec- tifi es his own daughter? In spite of this, White women saw value and re- deeming qualities in this guy. They voted “White” before they voted “wom- en.” A lot of working-class and middle-class whites who have seen their wag- es and salaries remain stagnant for 15 years were convinced that im- migrants are stealing their jobs and social pro- grams for lazy “colored” people have been drain- ing the public coff ers. Trump spoke directly to them and was able to con- vince them that he would be their champion. They wanted to believe him because he spoke to and validated their bigotry. We can also explain the Trump victory by under- standing voter suppres- sion and the Crosscheck Program. According to investigative journalist Greg Palast, Kris Ko- bach’s Crosscheck “re- moved tens of thousands of minority voters from the rolls in the swing states that surprisingly shift ed to Trump… Stop- ping Crosscheck is the Standing Rock of racist vote suppression.” Yes, the Democratic Party made a mistake closing ranks behind Hillary, especially aft er it was obvious that Bernie was the candidate with all the enthusiastic popular support? The way that the DNC mismanaged the nomi- nation of Congressman Keith Ellison to be the DNC chair is another ex- ample of this. They are not nearly as “progres- sive” as they try to make themselves out to be. KW: The country seems very divided by the election of Trump? Can that rift be healed while he’s in offi ce? WJL: No, not as long as the racist reaction- ary forces such as the Tea Party and Freedom Caucus continue to dom- inate. Also, neo-liberal politics is killing Amer- ica and it’s being sold wrapped in the cloak of xenophobic, fearmon- gering, racist, reaction- ary politics. As Lester Spence writes, “Racial politics perform work here, as white attitudes about labor, work, crime and taxes are fused to attitudes about Black men and women and, through them, to other non-white populations.” As Trump said, “When Mexico sends it people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not send- ing you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those prob- lems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I as- sume, are good people.” And on March 12 of this year, Congressman Ste- ven King (R-Iowa) said “… culture and demograph- ics are our destiny. We can’t restore our civili- zation with somebody else’s babies.” The next day, King said, “Individu- als will contribute diff er- ently, not equally, to this civilization and society. Certain groups of people will do more from a pro- ductive side than other groups of people will.” Chicago’s South Side and other crime-ridden in- ner-city neighborhoods safe? WJL: No. It’s a rhetoric to demonize a category of people and present a nar- rative that will prepare Americans for the mili- tarization of our urban centers. The evidence is clear, safety comes from education, jobs, and the hope for a profi table future. Investing in the infrastructure of our in- ner cities and the people who live there is how you make them safe.
