World News Briefs SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A federal appeals court will decide whether to reinstate President Donald Trump’s travel ban aft er a contentious hearing in which the judges hammered away at the administration’s motivations for the ban, but also directed pointed ques- tions to an attorney for two states try- ing to overturn it. It was unclear which way the three judges of the San Francisco-based 9th Circuit Court of Appeals would rule, though legal experts said the states ap- peared to have the edge. “I’m not sure if either side present- ed a compelling case, but I certainly thought the government’s case came across as weaker,” said Stephen Vla- deck, a professor at the University of Texas School of Law. A ruling could come as early as Wednesday and could be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. The appeals court challenged the ad- ministration’s claim that the ban was motivated by terrorism fears, but it also questioned the argument of an at- torney challenging the executive order on grounds that it unconstitutionally targeted Muslims. The letter was partly prompted by an AP investigation, which it cites, that found corruption in Venezuela’s food imports. It also calls for a thorough probe into alleged drug traffi cking and support for Middle Eastern terror groups by the country’s new vice presi- dent, Tareck El Aissami. El Aissami has been the target of U.S. law enforcement since his days as inte- rior minister almost a decade ago, and has been tied to bribes paid to offi cials by the nation’s top convicted drug traf- fi cker. He has denied any wrongdoing. Relations between the U.S. and its staunchest critic in Latin America have been tense for years — the two coun- tries haven’t exchanged ambassadors since 2010. And at Congress’ insistence, President Barack Obama sanctioned several top Venezuelan offi cials for cracking down on opponents or help- ing smuggle cocaine to the U.S. But Trump mentioned the country only briefl y during the campaign. And Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s com- ments during his confi rmation gave lit- tle sign of whether he will depart from the Obama administration’s relative restraint and call for dialogue between socialist President Nicolas Maduro and senatorial niceties to oppose Sessions and Republicans sticking up for him. King wrote that when acting as a fed- eral prosecutor, Sessions used his pow- er to “chill the free exercise of the vote by black citizens.” Quoting King technically put War- ren in violation of Senate rules for “impugning the motives” of Sessions, though senators have said far worse. And Warren was reading from a letter that was written 10 years before Ses- sions was even elected to the Senate. WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Elizabeth Warren has earned a rare rebuke by the Senate for quoting Coretta Scott King on the Senate fl oor.
