The court at Powell Barnett Park has undergone a full renovation thanks to a joint efort between Sparkling Ice, Seattle Parks and Recreation and the KDCF. At the unveiling, Kevin Durant, former Seattle Seahawks’ Jordan Babineaux, and Sparkling Ice representatives will be joined by children from the Boys and Girls Club Garield, and surrounding communities. County Council Soliciting Public Input on the King County Budget County Council Approves Method to Assist Small Art and Culture Organizations Public input is vital to the creation of the King Coun- ty Budget. Metropolitan King County Councilmem- ber Dave Upthegrove, chair of the Council’s Budget and Fiscal Management Committee, wants the public to come tell the Budget Committee what their priori- ties are for the County’s 2017-2018 Biennial Budget at three evening meetings throughout King County: • Wednesday, Oct. 5 – Seattle—King County Court- house, Council Chambers 10th Flr., 516 Third Ave • Thursday, Oct. 13 – Redmond—City Hall, 15670 NE 85th St, • Tuesday, Oct. 18 – Kent—Norm Maleng Regional Justice Center, Courtroom 3F, 401 Fourth Avenue N All of the Budget Committee meetings will start at 6:30 p.m. All members of the Council serve on the Budget Committee during the review of the budget and will join Councilmember Upthegrove and the three Coun- cilmembers who will direct the Budget Committee re- view panels: Physical Environment Panel Chair Rod Dembowski, Health, Human Services and Criminal Justice Panel Chair Claudia Balducci, and General Government Panel Chair Kathy Lambert. CIRCC to Host Candidates’ Forum Oct. 8 The Eritrean Association Community Center, Coa- lition of Immigrants, Refugees, and Communities of Color (CIRCC) will host a candidates’ forum from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Eritrean Association of Greater Seattle and Vicinity, 1528 Valentine Pl. South. The forum will include candidates in the race of Oice of Superintendent of Public Instruction, Con- gressional District 7, & Congressional District 9. Childcare and translators are available upon re- quest. Networking opportunities, as well as cultural presentations thanks to the Guatemala Folklore. Food and drinks are provided. The forum is presented by the community members of the following organizations: Cambodian Ameri- can Association, Circulo De Mamas, Eritrean Asso- ciation, Ethiopian Community Council, Faith Action Network, Filipino Community of Seattle, Formerly Incarcerated Group Healing Together, Lao Heritage Foundation, Latino Community Fund, League of Ed- ucation Voters, Rajana Society, Tigray Community The Metro King County Council received the blue- print for providing underserved communities with the opportunity to receive funding from King County for arts and cultural programs and preservation. In July 2015, the Council gave its unanimous sup- port to the adoption of the Building for Culture pro- gram, which uses bonds backed by the hotel-motel tax to build, maintain, expand, preserve, and improve new and existing cultural facilities. Building for Cul- ture is a partnership be- tween King County and 4Culture (King County’s cultural services agency). The plan developed by 4Culture, which is de- signed to be a competi- tive grant program, with awards of up to $25,000 to groups and $10,000 to individuals. To qualify for the grants, groups or individ- uals must show: • Strong demonstration of arts and cultural contributions to the community, with work rooted in communities of color, immigrant and refugee communi- ties, English language learners, people with low incomes, and those who are diferent- ly-abled; • Clear understanding that this support will provide an opportuni- ty for organizational growth or make a last- ing impact on the or- ganizations ability to serve the community; • Priority given to groups serving com- munities outside the City of Seattle or in Seattle neighbor- hoods traditionally under-represented in 4Culture funding.
