Killingsworth St. Nez Perce Nation to Host Memorial Ceremony Saturday Members of the Nez Perce Indian Nation will pres- ent their traditional memorial ceremony on the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site Saturday. The nearly three-hour ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. across 5th Street from the reconstructed Fort Vancouver. It is free to the public, although donations are welcome. The ceremony, presented by the Nez Perce Nation in cooperation with the City of Vancouver, the Fort Van- couver National Trust and the National Park Service, pays tribute to tribal ideals, honors tribal ancestors and helps to heal old wounds. During the Nez Perce War of 1877, as the U.S. Army was attempting to remove tribal members from an- cestral lands, 33 members of Chief Redheart’s band were captured under the direction of General O.O. Howard. Even though the band neither fought in In- dian Wars nor committed any crimes, they were held prisoner at Fort Vancouver through the winter of 1877-78. An infant member of the band died during this imprisonment. Ceremonial activities include singing, speeches, a Riderless Horse (empty-saddle) ceremony and a tra- ditional passing of the peace pipe. All U.S. military veterans are invited to join the ceremonial circle and be recognized. Refreshments at the ceremony provided by Meals on Wheels. Visitors should bring blankets or lawn chairs. Ample parking is available on 5th Street. After the ceremony, the public is encouraged to at- tend a traditional Native American meal, prepared and served by the Northwest Indian Veterans Associ- ation located in the Artillery Barracks at 600 E. OPB Celebrates Jazz Appreciation Month with New Documentary OPB is celebrating Jazz Appreciation Month in April by examining the vibrant history and impact of jazz in Portland that followed World War II. Premiering on television April 25 at 9 p.m. on OPB TV and online now, the new Oregon Experience half- hour documentary “Jazz Town” examines the erup- tion of music and nightlife in North and Northeast Portland in the 1940s and 50s. A colorful and sig- nificant chapter in the city’s cultural narrative, this short-lived period is largely unknown to many Ore- gonians. In advance of the television premiere, OPB is host- ing a free, public screening of “Jazz Town” on April 21 at the PCC Cascade Campus in North Portland. The event begins at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30) and will feature the full-length documentary and a Q&A with OPB Producer Eric Cain. “Jazz Town” airs Monday, April 25 at 9 p.m. on OPB TV and is available to watch online now at opb.org/ jazztown.
