Portland and SW Washington S P O T L I G H T youthbuild Vancouver GED/Construction Skills Info Sessions Bloomin’ Good Time Clark County residents, ages 17-24, who do not have a high school diploma and are interested in obtaining a GED and job-related skills are invited to attend a free YouthBuild Vancouver information session to learn about the program. The sessions will be held Thursday, May 14 and Tuesday, May 26 from 4-5:30 p.m. at Partners in Careers, 3210 NE 52nd Street, Vancouver 98663. To participate in YouthBuild, an individual must be: • A Clark County resident • 17 to 24 years old • A high school dropout in need of a high school diploma or GED • Interested in gaining job skills and experience Those enrolled in YouthBuild will have the opportunity, at no cost, to: • Obtain their GED or high school diploma • Gain two nationally-recognized construction certifications • Participate in building a house for a family in need • Receive services, including job, college and career preparation PHOTO CREDIT PORTLAND ROSE FESTIVAL It’s a Bloomin’ Good Time is the theme as the Rose Festival’s waterfront activities kick off on May 22 at 5 p.m. for Memorial Day weekend and three consecutive weekends at Governor Tom McCall waterfront Park. Opening Night Fireworks on Friday night, May 22, features a dance party and concert by Hit Machine in the RoZone and a huge fireworks display synchronized to great music. The second weekend of CityFair is jam-packed with music on the Rose City Stage and the Bridgetown stage, along with A walk on the wild Side exotic animals, arts and crafts in the kids Zone, and cool artifacts in the Rose Festival Museum – all FREE with CityFair admission. The final weekend of CityFair starts on wednesday, June 3, with an afternoon of free food and beverage samples for CityFair Sampler (FREE with admission). Fleet week is a highlight this weekend with ships from the US Navy, US Coast Guard, and Canadian Maritime Forces along the waterfront sea wall, and the amazing all-floral float creations from the Spirit Mountain Casino Grand Floral Parade will line Naito Parkway on Saturday afternoon and Sunday for up-close viewing, punctuating a rosy end to Rose Festival waterfront activities. The Civil Rights Committee of the Oregon State Bar will hosts this free public forum showing two poignant short films about the paradox of development in N/NE Portland. New and old residents of N/NE Portland will learn about the history of their neighborhood and the different mean- ings of the term “gentrification.” The films are “Future: Portland,” and “What Happened.” A panel discussion will feature Llondyn Elliott, one of the student film makers; Karl Dinkelspiel; a representative from the City of Portland Housing Bureau; and Rukaiyah Adams from “Future: Portland.” ASL interpreter will be provided.
