A Glance Back PHOTO BY LISA LOVING Thousands of local residents all over the city gathered for neighborhood parties to commemorate National Night Out Against Crime Aug. 7. In North Portland, PCC Cascade drew a crowd despite the blistering 90 degree-plus heat, offering ice cream, a clown, educational activities and more. Law enforcement professionals rubbed elbows with local famillies. At right, Jodell Wright, a parole and probation officer at Multnomah County, helped a youngster with her ice cream cone. Many more parties in North and Northeast parts of the city offered live music, food and fun. Obituary In Loving Memory of Our Mother Vernitta E. Lincoln July 30, 1960 – December 22, 2013 Vernitta Evette Lincoln was born July 30, 1960 in Portland, Oregon to Carlton B. Lin- coln and Eddie Mae Lincoln who preceded her in death. She attended John Adams High School. She enjoyed caring for others, and she was a certified nursing assistant for many years. She is survived by her chil- dren: DeLaFabian Branch, Vernisha Lin- coln, DeMarcus Lincoln, Delonny Lincoln, Latiqua Hanson and LeNitta Hanson; her two grandchildren, Lincoln Davis and LeHarmony Kidd; her brothers, Carton Lin- coln aka Daryl Lewis, (Angela) Dana Wash- ington, Brandon Davidson, and Harvey Jackson; and her sisters, Angela Greer (Richard) all of Portland , Oregon; Carletta Farley (Buck) of Atlanta, Ga. Viewing will be held from 5-8 p.m. at Highland Christian Center, 7600 N.E. Glisan, on January 2, 2013. Funeral servic- es will be held on January 3, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. at Highland Christian Center. Burial to follow at Portland Memorial. People who attended the annual Kidney Health Fest for African American Families Saturday, June 22, at Van Asselt Elementary School, could enjoy healthy snacks along with a nutritious lunch prepared by local chefs. This year’s Fest was dedicated to coach and mentor Willie Austin, a man who dedicated his life to helping others get healthy and fit. People attending the Fest could get health screenings for kidney disease, sickle -cell and HIV as well as have their glucose and cholesterol checked. There were also a variety of exhibitors, speakers and demonstrations. and activities for kids.
