Local News COMMUNITY NEWS BRIEFS History of Redlining Former Oregonian reporter Nikole Han- nah-Jones and radio producer Nancy Updike won the prestigious Sidney award in December for House Rules, a radio story for the program This American Life. The pair collaborated on the story, which looks at the history of racial profiling in housing. The story explains how government redlining created extreme segregation in cities across America. “House Rules tells the little-known histo- ry of one of the most important pieces of civil rights legislation in U.S. history,” said Sidney judge Lindsay Beyerstein, “The pro- gram exposes a legacy of official housing discrimination and documents the ongoing efforts to reverse it.” Hannah Jones reported for the Oregonian until moving to the investigative reporting nonprofit ProPublica in 2011. The Sidney Award is given once a month to an outstanding piece of journalism about social or economic injustice, by the Sidney Hillman Foundation, which also awards the annual Hillman Prizes every spring. Free Haircuts for Youth For some families, giving their kids a great haircut is a treat that may happen a couple times a year. Imagine a child who has never had a good cut or style because it is too expensive? Every child deserves to feel special at Christmas, and a new haircut makes you feel like a whole new person. Sunshine Volunteers Holiday Basketball Teen Force will hold its Second Annual Basketball Tournament during winter break. There will be a 6th-8th grade bracket and 9th-12th grade bracket. Black Parent Initiative Holiday Parent Fair The Black Parent Initiative will hold a holiday parent fair from 11 a.m.—2 p.m. Dec.21, at McCoy Village Community Room, 4430 NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Childcare will be provided ages 3-12. The event will include two workshops: Lit- eracy Traditions in the Black Community and Balancing Home, Life, and Academic Parenthood. Helping Kids: Toy n’ Joy Makers and Sunshine Division When East Precinct officers responded to a call about a disturbance at a home in Southeast Portland’s Centennial neighbor- hood, they expected trouble. But when the officers arrived they learned no crime had occurred. They did find a problem, howev- er. The mom who lived in the home was struggling to provide a nice Christmas for her three children, ages 2, 5 and 12. There was no Christmas tree or gifts in the home, and the family was clearly in a diffi- M U N I T Y More than 100 volunteers, staff, and Portland police officers gathered at the Sunshine Division Warehouse Dec.16 to pack 3,500 holiday food boxes for local area families. With their help, the officers got several boxes of toys for the kids for Christmas.
