Local News COMMUNITY NEWS BRIEFS Sunshine Urgently Needs Volunteers this Weekend The Portland Police Sunshine Division is in critical need of volunteers for this Satur- day’s food box delivery. Starting at 9 a.m. the Sunshine Division, Portland Police Offi- cers and community volunteers will deliver 1,000 food boxes to Portland area families as part of the Sunshine Division’s 2nd Annual Hunger Doesn’t Vacation program. The Sunshine Division needs 200 volun- teer drivers to help personally deliver food boxes to local homes. Drivers can take as little or as many boxes as they want, depart- ing from the Sunshine Division Warehouse at 687 N. Thompson or North Precinct, located at 449 N.E. Emerson; delivery typi- cally concludes by noon. Those interested in volunteering, should email Kris Padden vol- unteer coordinator with the Sunshine Divi- sion at kris@sunshinedivision.org or call 503-823-2176. Portland Schools and Parks offering Free Food and Fun Portland Public Schools, SUN Communi- ty Schools and Portland Parks and Recre- ation Sites in selected North, Northeast and Southeast neighborhoods will be offering free summer meals for children and teens ages 1 to 18 at parks, schools, pools and community centers. The free lunch for children plus fun sum- mer activities is a winning combination for Portland families and an important way to fill the gap for kids who are at higher risk of C O M M U going hungry during the summer months. Questions: Dial 2-1-1 or text your zip code to 898211 Good in the Hood Community Day at the Historical Society On June 22, the Oregon Historical Socie- ty hosts its second Community Day of the year. Tours, crafts, and activities are sched- uled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and admission to the museum is free all day. To celebrate the opening of the Oregon History Museum’ new exhibit “Windows on America: The Challenges of Presidential Leadership,” Abraham Lincoln imperson- ator Stephen Holgate will recreate a 19th century town hall meeting in two perform- ances at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Docent-led tours will be available throughout the day in both “Windows on America” and “For All the World to See: Visual Culture and the Struggle for Civil Rights.” A product of NEH on the Road, “For All the World to See” reveals how both the media and everyday objects profoundly impacted the civil rights movement. Local civil rights activists Bob Boyer, Harvey Lee Garnett and Donna Maxey will talk to guests in the “For All the World to See” exhibit hall from noon to 3 p.m. For more information go to www.ohs.org. N I T Y C A Organizers of North and Northeast’s biggest neighborhood festival, Good in the Hood (pictured above) are kicking off the celebrations starting Thursday, June 20, with a meet and greet at McMenamin’s Kennedy School, from 5 to 11 p.m. The fun continues Saturday June 29, with a carnival at Lillis Albina Park and a parade along Northeast MLK Boulevard. The carnival runs noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday, then Sunday, June 30, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Good in the Hood Kids’ Space runs daily from 12-6 p.m. with exciting activities, crafts, exhibits, and participatory games, face painting, and puppet shows.
