Free Eye Exams and
Glasses by Oregon
Lions
The Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Foun-
dation launched a new component to their
Lions Eyeglass Assistance Program this
year. In addition to distributing used readers
to people in need, now through a partner-
ship with Vision Service Plan and Prevent
Blindness America, OLSHF and the 175
Oregon Lions Clubs will provide free eye
exams and eyeglasses to qualified people in
Oregon and Northern California.
U.S residents 18 and older living at 200
percent or below the Federal Poverty Level
are eligible for service. Individuals seeking
help must call the Lions in Service Referral
System by leaving a detailed message at
971-270-0203 or they can e-mail their con-
tact information and request to lionsclubsre-
ferrals@olshf.org. Lions volunteers will
route these call to the appropriate club, who
will then begin the application process. Eli-
gible applicants will be notified within 10
business days.
OLSHF serves more than 100,000 people
a year at an average cost of less than $10 per
person. For more information, go to
www.olshf.org.

Public Hearings on
Portland City Budget
A public hearing on the city budget March
6 packed the conference room at the Immi-
grant and Refugee Community Organiza-
tion in East Portland. Speakers urged the
council not to cut support for the East Port-
land Action Plan, including early childhood
education and a family resource center at
Earl Boyles Elementary; and sidewalks on
N.E. 136th Avenue, where Morgan May-
nard-Cook, 5, was killed last week crossing
the road.
City Commissioners had also asked for
suggestions of where they should cut, but
fewer people had ideas to share. Among the
suggestions offered were: furlough days for
city staff and not hiring to replace empty
positions.
Other hearings will be held:
