Arts & Entertainment Love for Linda: A Benefit for Portland’s ‘Soul Diva’ Artists from across the regional spectrum will be onstage Sunday, Nov. 11 at Jimmy Mak’s A n all-star cast of Portland blues, soul and R&B artists are coming together for Love for Linda, a benefit for Port- land soul diva Linda Hornbuckle, at Jimmy Mak’s, Sunday, Nov. 11. Linda, recently diagnosed with kidney can- cer, has taken a sabbatical from work and her band while she undergoes treatment. Her powerful band—Doug Lewis on guitar, Randy Monroe on bass, Lenn Russell on drums and Louis Pain on keyboards—contin- ues in the interim, backing such guest vocalists as Andy Stokes and LaRhonda Steel. The band will back several guest stars at Love for Linda. Participating artists at the benefit include Steele, Andy Stokes, Patrick Lamb, Lloyd Jones, DK Stewart, Sonny Hess & NW Women in R&B, Janice Scroggins, Lisa Mann, Norman Sylvester, and more. There will be two shows, 6-8 p.m. and 9-11 p.m. Tickets for each show are $25 in advance and are available online at www.tickettomato.com. Hornbuckle started singing at the age of six in Portland’s Grace & Truth Pentecostal Church, a church pastured by her father, Bish- op Howard Hornbuckle. Linda has thrilled audiences in the Pacific Northwest, Europe, Canada and across the U.S. She has toured and/or recorded with national recording artists Quarterflash, Nu-Shooz, and Dan Reed. In recent years Linda has performed regu- larly and recorded in a duo with award-winning pianist Janice Scroggins, as well as with the Linda Hornbuckle Band, firmly establishing herself as The North- west’s #1 Soul Sister. She has performed at scores of benefits for causes and issues, most recently Brian Grant’s “Shake It ‘til We Make It” Parkinson’s fundraiser. By day, Linda is a community health spe- cialist for the Multnomah County Health Department, educating teens about health issues that affect them, such as HIV, sexual- ly transmitted diseases and teen pregnancy. Proceeds from “Love for Linda” are being administered in Linda’s behalf by the Cas- cade Blues Association, a 501 C3 non-profit. Tickets to the event are tax deductible.
