Church Holy Men Gathering Together in Spirit and Style By Eloise Thompson, Publicity Ministry, Community A.M.E. Zion Church, Vancouver, WA T he Men’s Ministry, Brother in Christ, hosted their Fifth Annual Men’s Conference and First Men’s Style Show last month in Vancouver, Wash. Reaching out to bridge the gap between our Youth (our emerging men) and wisdom Senior Adult men) was the main focus of this year’s conference activity. Community A. M. E. Zion Church was the site of the first activity – a Spaghetti Fellowship Dinner followed by the on-line viewing of the documentary film “Bring Your ‘A’ Game”, a ground-breaking film directed by Mario Van Pee- bles, produced by Karen Williams in partnership with Twenty-First Century Foundation (21CF). This film laid the founda- tion for Saturday’s discussion panels held at the Vancouver Marriott Springhill Suites. Three panels - Emerging Men (our Youth), Young Adult Men and Senior Adult Men - dis- The crowd applauds the male models cussed the plight of Black men in today’s society and addressed a series of pre- determined topics (morals, life goals, responsibilities, leadership and love). Later that afternoon, the men invited the ladies to attend their delectable early dinner and style show. The men strutted their stuff with excellence and style. Three year old Forrest stole the show in his 2-pc brown seersucker suit and woven fedora. A special worship pro- gram was held on Sunday at Community A. M. E. Zion Church, Rev. Joyce M. Smith, Pastor. Holy men from various local churches gathered in spirit to give praises to the Lord. Elder Walter L. Smith, Jr. the first Administrative Assistant to the Senior Pastor of Heaven Bound Deliverance Center in Portland, Oregon, was the guest speaker. In closing, he pointed out a few truths: (1) God is looking for men not afraid of giants; (2) Men must have enough faith to believe, enough faith to speak out and enough faith to stand in the gap; (3) Women don’t need a man on the ‘free lunch program’ (4) Every woman should look for a man who’s not afraid to call on God.
