Local News COMMUNITY NEWS BRIEFS Visions for East Portland Development Groundwork Portland hosts a youth- led Community Visioning Workshop with visioning specialist Jim Wadell to establish priorities for the develop- ment of vacant, under-utilized space in East Portland. The event is Saturday, August 25, from noon to 3 p.m. at the East Portland Community Center, 740 SE 106th Ave. near SE Cherry Blos- som Street in southeast Portland. Groundwork Portland invites all community members and interested parties to attend. The Community Visioning event is free to the public and includes lunch. Black United Fund Higher Education Programs Do you have a child who is going to be a junior or senior in high school next year? Do they need help planning their post-secondary education? The BUFOR’s Think to the Future educa- tion program can help provide financial resources and information from financial aid, loans, scholarships and applying to colleges for students. C O BUFOR’s most recent addition is the Mentor4Success with the ASPIRE cur- riculum offering one-on-one mentoring for high school juniors and seniors to guide them through the process of applying for college. BUFOR is now accepting student applications for: SAT Preparation Sessions: Study help for the SATs. $10 per student, Sept. 8, 15 and 22 from 9-12 p.m. Please RSVP by Aug. 27. Scholarship Writing Workshop: Six hour workshop designed to help guide youth through the scholarship writing process by giving them step-by-step tools they need, help them prepare a scholarship portfolio, and providing them an opportunity to write an award winning essay. (PCRI) has hired Portland native Greg Brown as deputy director, in charge of daily operations for the organization. He will also be responsible for the organization’s fundraising activities. Prior to joining PCRI, Brown worked at Albina Community Bank, and he has spent over 29 years in the banking industry. Brown currently volunteers as Board Chairman for the Maurice Lucas Foundation. He is a former board member of the Urban League of Portland, Portland Schools Foundation, Oregon Food Bank, YWCA of Greater Portland, Ethos Music School, Portland Jazz Festival, and the Oregon Sports Authority. Brown previously served as Board Treasurer on PCRI’s Board of Directors.
