Local News COMMUNITY NEWS BRIEFS Join People of Purpose & Associates (P.O.P.A.) for the 7th Annual Z-Man Bas- ketball Tournament and Day of Re-Tilling the Soil, Saturday, July 21. The event is a unique opportunity to uplift North and Northeast Portland as well as getting togeth- er for a free barbecue – all during a basketball tournament for youth. The Z-Tournament, named in honor of deceased Portland Police Officer Mark Zylawy, runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Irving Park, NE 7th and Fremont Street. To sign up for the tournament call 503- 839-1701, or 503-839-8676. From 8:15 -8:45 a.m. is registration and breakfast; at 9 a.m. the clean-up begins. Kerby Ave.; and the Truevine Church 1601 NE Killingsworth Ave. Portland Copwatch Celebrates Anniversary Peace and Justice Works and Portland Copwatch are inviting the community to come celebrate 20 years working for a bet- ter world. Join PJW/PCW on Saturday, July 21 at 7 p.m. at the Peace House, 2116 NE 18th (at Tillamook) for a fun and education- C O M al fundraising event. There will be entertainment (including music by “Shaky & Larry”), refreshments, memorabilia, information about PJW and PCW’s first 20 years, and items for sale. Peace and Justice Works, a 501-c-3 non- profit dedicated to promoting nonviolent conflict resolution on local, national and international levels, was founded in March, 1992. Milestone Relay For Life Ceremony to Honor Cancer Survivors A special Luminaria Ceremony to be held during the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Vancouver will remember those lost to cancer and honor those who have survived. Luminaria will be lit at Columbia River High School on Saturday, July 21 at 10 p.m. to represent these individuals. Anyone desiring to make a luminaria donation may do so by contacting Stephanie Elmore at 503-795-3993 or by visiting van- couverrelay.org. Prior to the Luminaria Ceremony, the Sur- vivors Lap will kick off the 2012, Relay For Life event in Vancouver on Saturday, July 21 at 10:15am as survivors will circle the track, surrounded by friends and family cheering them on. M U N I T P Day of Re-Tilling the Soil Longtime Portland Public Schools administrator Carolyn Leonard retired last week after 37 years in Portland schools working on multicultural education and civil rights issues. Her well-attended retirement party included an announcement by Albina Head Start Director Ron Herndon that Leonard plans to run for the Portland Public Schools Board.
