local news Community news Briefs Dishman Fitness Trainer Celebrates 50 years of Helping Seniors Celebrate with Chuck Amato as he marks 50 years as a fitness trainer for Portland Parks & Recreation. Amato’s clients include many elderly and disabled people, dealing with strokes, brain injuries, and other ail- ments. The party starts at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 16 at Matt Dishman Community Center, 77 N.E. Knott St. Vancouver NAACP Holds Annual Meeting Black Santa is just one of the attractions at the June Key Delta Community Center’s Holiday Bazaar. The bazaar will feature gifts by local artists and artisans, including: African American greeting cards and orna- ments, Native American jewelry, clothing, art and holiday treats. The bazaar will run 4 to 7 p,m., Friday Dec. 9; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday Dec. 10; and 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday Dec. 11. The June Key Delta Community center is located at 5940 N. Albina Ave. Help Advantis and Sunshine Division Feed Vancouver NAACP will hold its annual membership meeting from 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 17 at Clark County YWCA, 3609 Main St., Vancouver, Wash. Members and non-members are invited to meet current officers of the Vancouver NAACP and learn more about how the group supports civil rights for all in the Northwest. Cascade AIDS Project will offer a brief presentation on HIV/AIDS in the African American Community. A free pancake breakfast will be served to all. Last year supporters made cash contributions of $7,300 to the drive. Anyone can contribute by helping fill food barrels placed in branch lobbies. Forgot to bring cans? No problem. You can buy cans of tuna for just $1 each at any branch. Advantis is working with the Sunshine Division to help make sure food is available for everyone. “Foods high in protein, such as tuna fish, play such a vital role in the fundamentals of fighting hunger and providing hunger relief; and that need for nutritious foods is preva- lent year-round,” said Officer Phil Kent of the Portland Police Bureau Sunshine Division. “We applaud Advantis Credit Union for their leadership in helping us stock our pantry and spreading the word on this critical need for food- and fund-raising year-round.” Helpful donations are critical year-round and include: foods high in protein (like tuna and peanut butter) breakfast cereal — both hot and cold whole-grain pasta canned vegetables and fruit baby food, formula, diapers Sign of the Times The Police Activities League invites you to support our youth by coming to the first ‘Best of the NW Classic Youth Football Tournament, 5 - 7 pm Saturday, Dec 10 at Roosevelt High School. Three teams from Seattle and Portland will compete in three age divisions: 9-10, 11-12, and 13-14. Entry fee is $4 with all proceeds supporting youth activities.
