The talk is in the Multicultural Center, Room 228, Smith Memorial Building at Portland State University from noon to 1:30 p.m. This event is co-sponsored by the Black Studies Department and the Multicultural Center. The mission of the Black Bag Speaker Series is to create a place where community organizations and activists whose work focuses on issues related to the communities of Black people in Portland, Oregon and the nation can engage in critical insightful dis- cussions with the Portland State University community. Local Soul Food Cafe Brings Chitlins Back For Benefit Festival Po’Shines: Cafe de la Soul, a non-profit soul food cafe in North Portland, will be hosting a Chitlin Festival on Friday, Nov. 11, through Saturday, Nov. 12, at the cafe on 8139 N. Denver. Po’Shines will feature a variety of chitlin dishes for both seasoned and curious eaters to try, including fried chitlins, traditional stewed chitlins, and more. All proceeds from the event will go toward the launching of the official Po’Shines culinary training program for at risk youth and young adults. c o m Since Po’Shines opened its doors in the summer of 2007, its mission, in addition to providing great food and service, was to give at risk youth and young adults an opportunity to get job training and experi- ence in the culinary world. Over the last 4 years, Po’shines has not only grown into an established Portland soul food restaurant, but has also helped many individuals on their road back to success. With the help of community sponsors and donations, Po’Shines looks to update their facilities and launch the program in summer of 2012. This is the third year that Po’Shines has brought the rare southern cuisine of chitlins to Portland diners. Chitlins (pig intestines) are not something often seen in the city, let alone the northwest, however staff at Po’shines haven’t been surprised by the growing turnout to previous events, and the increasing requests for chitlins throughout the year. In addition to plenty of good food, the two day festival will also feature local music and other chitlin festivities. For more information call Po’Shines at 503- 978-9000 or email poshines@gmail.com.
