Mirrored after the International Nobel Peace Prize, student Meliss Wood said they wanted to honor local leaders for their con- tribution to peace. The class of 33 students has been working to identify, interview and nominate persons and organizations that promote peace, democracy and sustainabili- ty in Portland, as well as organizing and promoting the event. The event is free. The event will feature Portland City Commissioner Dan Saltzman as a keynote speaker, music by activist singer/songwriter David Rovics and information booths from local community organizations. During a silent auction, more than $400 worth of items from Patagonia, Laughing Planet Café, OMSI, Salty’s Dog and Cat Shop, and Yoga Shala will be distributed. Proceeds will benefit the Portland Peace Prize winner’s nonprofit of choice. “Jefferson has been for the past 100 years thriving and accomplishing the unthinkable. We a diverse family that values our com- munity and city, and the Portland Peace Prize uncovers how great we as a whole are,” Student Iyesha Rosser said.
