arts & entertainment Congo’s ‘Viva Riva’ wins Top African Academy Awards Filmed By Bike Festival Begins April 15 at Clinton Street Theater D he 9th Annual Filmed by Bike – a film festi- val filled entirely with bike-themed movies from around the world – will take place April 15-17 at the Clinton Street Theater, 2516 SE Clinton St. In the films, love can blos- som, adventures are sought, races are completed and sto- ries of two-wheeled adven- tures cycle across the silver screen in eight minutes or less, the festival’s time limit for each film. Opening night will feature the New Belgium Street Party, a Speed Raffle pre- sented by Sock Dreams entertainment and DJ Beyondadoubt (aka DJ Beyonda). Generous bike espite being made in a country of 70 mil- lion people devoid of a single movie theatre, the Congoleses-Kinshasa film ‘Viva Riva!’ has won top honors at the African Academy Awards. The film – produced on location with local actors and crew – won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Production Design, in addi- tion to Best Supporting Actor awards. The film follows Riva, a small-time crook who returns to his hometown of Kinshasa with a major score of hijacked gasoline. When Riva encounters the beauti- ful night club denizen — and kept woman of a local gangster – Nora, things get dicey. The top film, as chosen by the jury, will be awarded the Golden Helmet Award, pre- sented by Nutcase Helmets with a $250 cash prize pre- sented Saturday following the 7 p.m. show. The film with the best use of inde- pendent music will be awarded the GoIndepen - dent! Award, a $250 cash prize from Bike Gallery, to be presented on Friday. Tickets are available at the door for $8 or $25 for an unlimited entry festival pass that includes a free DVD.
