Get Sneak Peek at ‘ma Rainey’
Portland Playhouse invites public for rehearsal
Mark your calendars. The public is
invited to a sneak peak at the new
Portland Playhouse production of August
Wilson’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”
from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 7
at the Playhouse, 602 NE Prescott St.
In addition to viewing the first rehears-
al for the critically acclaimed play, atten-
dees to the free event will be meeting
with the cast and production team.
Director Kevin Jones, who was nominat-
ed for a Drammy Award for last season’s
Playhouse production of August Wilson’s
‘Radio Golf,’ will speak with the audi-
ence about his vision for the project.
Refreshments will be provided.
The cast for ‘Black Bottom’ includes
Julianne Johnson as Ma Rainey, Victor
Mack as Levee, Wrick Jones as Toledo,
Jerry Foster as Slow Drag, Wendell
Wright as Cutler, Duffy Epstein as Irvin,
Bruce Burthartsmeier as Sturdyvant,
Andrea White as Dussie Mae and Gavin
Hoffman as the cop.

After the matinees on
March 12 and 19, there will
be a special panel discus-
sion with artists, survivors
and health care profession-
als.
In the play, Angela, a
mother of two, begins to
question her faith, her mar-
riage, family and friends
after she is diagnosed with
breast cancer. She learns to
accept that not everything
should be taken for granted
in life and that even the
love of family and friends
have limitations.
The play is directed by A.

feature Portland artists
