Criteria For
Peace Corps
A veteran of the Peace Corps
"since the beginning," is in Eu
gene meeting with interested
students at the University of
Oregon.
Timmy Napolitano, whose of
ficial title is project officer for
the Near East and South Asia
division of the peace corps, ex
plained the criteria for peace
corps volunteers Tuesday.
"First," she said, "the volun
teer must have a sense of hu
mor. If you don't have, you
won't survive. Life gets tough
and the emotions get high and
you must be able to laugh at
yourself.
"Also," Mrs. Napolitano said,
"the volunteer should have a
strong eagerness and willing
ness to serve . . . they should
think it is worth doing. I don't
mean they should be martyrs,
but they should have a curious
mind and a desire Us understand
themselves as well as the cul
ture of the country they are in.
"The volunteer should be a
sensitive human being, We can
teach them the mores and. the
culture . . . such as not to eat
meat in India where the natives
can see you. But they have to
be sensitive enough to under
stand other people's feelings.
"There are two sides of the
coin on the question of skill.
First is the formal, such as engi
neer, teacher, or electrician and
the second is the informal. This
simply means getting the people
in the community to help them
selves by working with them
and by example.
"A language aptitude is a nice
thing to have, but it is not a
necessity. It is a bonus. The
peace corps will teach the lan
guage but the volunteer should
have a desire to learn."
There are currently 44 coun
tries asking for volunteers, ac
cording to Kirs. Napolitano, and
over 4,000 prospective volun
teers are scheduled to begin
training soon.
"The peace corps is funda
mentally an education job," she
said, "we teach people to help
themselves."

New Golf
Class Set
Because people were turned
away from two beginning golf
classes now in session, the Eu
gene Bureau of Parks and Rec
reation is scheduling another
one.
The newest class will be on
Saturdays from 1 to 3 p.m. day
light starting this Saturday.
Gene Andal, director of the
Monroe Community Center and
instructor for the classes, said
many people had to be turned
away because of lack of avail
able space in the first two
classes.
Practice will be held in the
Monroe Community Center and
in Monroe Park. The class fee
will be $3. Persons may enroll
at the parks office in the city
hall, or by phoning DI 4-1406.
Heceta Light
To Be Automated
FLORENCE, Ore. Wl Auto
mation is about to put another
Oregon lighthouse keeper out
of business.
The Coast Guard has an.
nounced that the Heceta Head
Lighthouse, 12 miles north of
Florence, will be made auto
matic about July 20.
Keeper Oswald Allik, with
more than 30 years in light
house and coast guard service,
will retire.
Heceta Head Lighthouse was
built in 1894.
During the past IVi years the
Coast Guard has automated the
North Head and Cape Meares
lighthouses. North Head is near
the mouth of the Columbia
River. Meares is just west of
Tillamook.
Dunes Hearing Saturday;
