Page 6B EUGENE REGISTER NWL Opens Its Ninth Season Tuesday By PAUL HARVEY III Of lb Regtsler-tjiiaid The Northwest League opens its ninth baseball sea son Tuesday night with the same line-up of cities, a new look and a big question. How fast will the NWL be under the new minor league set-up that took all B, C and D leagues and lumped them into Class A? The Northwest League, Class B since its inception in 1955, is expected to be at the top of the Class A heap or at least that's what the base ball brass promises. While most Class A leagues this year will allow only two veterans, the Northwest League has upped its limit to eight who are in at least their fourth season of pro ball. All six clubs, each a charter member when seven-club league replaced the Western International League nine years ago, are back and all with full working agreements for the first time. Four clubs Wenatchee with the Chicago Cubs, Lew iston with Kansas City, Yaki ma with Mllwaukie and Salem with the Los Angeles Dodgers had the same arrangement In 1062. But Eugene has switched from San Francisco to the Chicago White Sox and Tri Clty, which got help from a group of major league clubs last season, now has a full pact with the Los Angeles An gels. It marks the first time in the history of the NWL that all the clubs have had full agreements. Tri-City, with experience and what some claim is the best hitting team in the league, may be the club to beat. Trl-City, after it got the agreement with the Angels, announced it was changing its nickname from the Braves to the Angels. George N o g a, 35-year-old veteran of seven seasons as a skipper in the White Sox or ganization, takes over at Eu gene and George Freese, long time Pacific Coast League mainstay, moves into We natchee. Robbie Robertson, who probably will be an active player, steps in at Lewlston in place of popular manager catcher John McNamara who was promoted to Binghamp ton, N.Y., of the Class AA Eastern League. Attendance has been falling off in recent years to 278, 124 last year, lowest in the circuit's history. But all six clubs are report ed sound financially and NWL President Jim Fleishman said there's new interest that, he said, should send attendance rocketing upward, with a break from the weather. Eugene, traditionally the attendance leader, fell off to 46,067 last year, lowest since professional baseball returned to the city in 1955 and 37,000 less than 1958. When the split-season cam paign opens Tuesday night with Eugene at Salem, Lewis ton at Wenatchee and Tri City at Yakima, the fans will see more than two dozen play ers back from preceding years: Tri-City pitcher John Dc wald is back for his fourth season and the Angels also have another pitching re turnee in lefthander Bill Harris. Outfielder Don Marrs, who led Lcwiston in hitting last year with a .297 average, re turns to the Broncos and so does pitcher Gary Sanosian, 7-13 in 1062. Seven are back at Salem Including relief ace Kenny Page, who had an 8-5 record and catcher Bill Kelso, now a pitcher who has been im pressive in spring training. Wenatchee has outfield er Phil Borders who hit .305 and had 12 homers last year and power hitter Spencer Scott who hit .302 and slammed 15 homers with Tri City and the Chiefs in 1962. Pitcher Ron Hcrr, 10-9 last year, inficlder Rafael Gomcx (.299) and pitcher Dick Lamcry who played part of last year and also 1081 are back at Yakima. Third base man Juan Guzman was with Tri-City last year. Salem and Tri-City will be looking for their first NWL championships, each having won half a seson but never the full season crown. Wenatchee, which won the first half, beat second-half winner Tri-City for the 1962 title. Eugene will be looking for its first title since the 1955 inaugural season while peren nial contender Yakima will be trying for its fifth. Eugene Noga will be bringing eight players who played under him at Sarasota of the then Class D Florida Statu League last year. The pitching looks sound but the hitting has not been too impressive in spring camp at Sarasota, Fla. Noga doesn't seem too con cerned about the hitting. First baseman Dale Rohde was .319 with 106 runs batted in at Visalia of the California League last year. The outfielders all hit well a year ago, Ed Evans with .300 at Sarasota, Jon Scott with .301 at Clinton of the Midwest league and .370 at Sarasota and John Koehb?r with .293 at Visalia. Catcher Ed Barbcrie, like Rohde and pitcher John Zahn an all-league selection, hit .281 at Sarasota. The pitchers include right hander Zahn who struck out 255 while compiling a 14-12 record and 2.70 carned-run average at Sarasota. Lefthander John Bauer, 14-9 at Clinton, and righthander Manuel Carlos, 14-6 at Clin ton, may be the keys. Carlos has been tabbed for starting duties in the opener at Salem. Salem The Dodgers have been im pressive this spring, more than holding their own against such higher minor league clubs as Spokane and Albu querque. Kelso seems to have made the conversion from catcher to pitcher well. Myrle Calmus had a 15-2 record in the Mid west League and Terry Bar ECash 'n 1768 At A Discount! We. TRUCK & TRAILER LOAD!! Newcomers include Cleo James who hit .280 and 25 homers with Great Falls of the Pioneer League last year and Tom McGarrey who hit .308 at Boise in the same circuit. Wenatchee Just as in the past, Wenat chee comes in with a young club that includes a pair of 25-year-olds infield returnee Frank DeMoss and pitching returnee Joe Zahn as the oldest. The Chiefs, who sent such stars as Ken Hubbs and Nel son Mathews to the Cubs, may have an infield defense that rivals 1962. Freese predicts first base man Mack Kuykendall will be the next first baseman with the Cubs. Except for Zahn, the pitch ing staff age ranges between 18 and 21. One of the top pros pects is ' 18-year-old Harold Haydel, who came to the Cubs in the recent deal that sent Murphy to Houston. Haydel- is expected to team with lefthander George I.amcc, winner of 13 at St. Cloud of the Northern League, and righthander Bob Flynn to form the "Big Three." Lewiston The Broncs are rated su perior to the 1962 club with three veteran minor league players. Emeralds Arrive The Eugene Emeralds ar rive in town Sunday from their Sarasota, Fla., spring training base and plan an aft ernoon workout at Bethel Park. That is, weather permitting. The club hopes to have another workout Monday aft ernoon and then will meet the fans in a 6:30 p.m. affair at Bethel Park rain or shine. Thicm, 27, is starting his 10th season , and catcher Woody Huyke was in the Army after hitting .307 at Portsmouth of the South Atlantic League in 1961. The infield is all new and the pitchers, none with any standout win-loss records in 1962, had impressive strike out performances. One of them, Vern Handrahan, struck out 241 while compiling a 13 14 mark at Boise. Joining Marrs in the out field are Allen Lewis and Luis Rodriquez, both with the Broncs briefly last year. Tri-City The Angels have three mound veterans in Harris, De wald and Rocco Giordano and - the core of the San Jose club that won the California League crown last year. Jack Ilialt, with .315 at San Jose, will be the catcher. San Jose teammates Dave Best LOWELL CHASE assW I J seal sasT AM NOON ri ii u u avj Hal t rr jiplP151J Qjl Night (.284) at second, shortstop third baseman Ernie Foli ( 283) and outfielders Terry Banderas (.274) and Jack Warner (.270 and 21 homers) also should help the Angels. Tri-City will have a $50,000 bonus baby in pitcher Pat Rogan. The Angels also may get Dave Mann who has spent most of the last 10 seasons as an outfielder in the Pacific Coast League. Yakima Yakima has good hitting, some claim second only to Tri-City, and the pitching is reported as improved over last year. Dan Kern, who slammed 26 homers and had 105 RBls in the Northern League and Georgia-Florida circuit, could be a prize. Gomez, a second baseman last year, is being shifted to third. The Bears have a promising righthander in Fred Alworth who compiled a 12-6 record with Boise last year in his rookie season. There is only one lefthand er, Alexander Pietrewicz, who had a 13-14 record in the Georgia-Florida League. Lam cry had a 14-11 record with Yakima in 1961. One of the Yakima catchers is Ray Haroldson, former Uni versity of Oregon athlete. Marcel Allen, with Yakima in 1961 when he hit .307 and a .325 hitter last year at Boise provides speed in the outfield. Trouble Strikes Without Warning . . .
