Churches List Holy Week Observances I ; Holy Week will begin Sunday at Emerald Empire churchea on triumphal note with the observance of Palm Sunday. On Monday, the solemn nature of Holy Week will again be in effect In some liturgical groups, Wednesday ia known aa "Spy Wednesday," and Thursday is generally observed aa Maundy Thursday, the observance of the institution of the Lord's Supper or Holy Communion. Friday ia Good Friday, with churchea scheduling solemn meditation services at the traditional noon hour or in the evening. A number of Roman Catholic churches in the Emerald Empire have scheduled Esster Vigil services Saturday eve ning, beginning at various times. Early risers will have variety of Easter sunrise services to choose from this year In the Emerald Empire, and almost all Protestant churches In the Emerald Empire have special programs scheduled for wora'nip services on Easter Sunday, April 14. Holy Week services this year will include a number of special or unusual services. St Thomas' Episcopal Church, 1465 Coburg Rd., Eugene, will turn to a service more than 400 yeara old for its ob servance of Maundy Thursday at 8 p.m. The service will be from the Prayer Book of 1549. The Rev. Edgar Tainton said he scheduled the service to "empha size the continuity of the prayer book" as used by the Epis copal Church. Easter pageants scheduled Sunday include a program by the Sunday school at 0:45 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Rt. 4 Box 358-A, (McBeth Road), Eugene. Youngsters from the' Sunday school at Willakenzie Evan gelical United Brethren Church, 260 Willakenzie Rd, Eugene, will present a passion pageant Sunday at 9:45 a.m. - And at Leaburg, an Easter'pageant, "From Triumph to Triumph," ia scheduled Sunday at 7 p.m. at McKenzie Baptist Church. Confirmation will be at 11 a.m. Sunday at St. Paul Lu theran Church, Florence, and Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, West 11th Avenue and Territorial Road in Veneta. Twenty-one young people will be confirmed at 11 a.m. Sunuday at Grace Lutheran Church, 710 E. 17th Ave, Eugene. First Christian Church, 1166 Oak St, Eugene, will have a baptismal service Sunday at 7:30 p.m. And at Mapleton, the Mapleton Community Evangelical United Brethren Church has scheduled a 7 p.m. showing of 12 oil paintings by Mrs. P. P. Petticord depicting the life of Christ. Three morning Masses are scheduled for Spy Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Eugene. These masses will be at 6:30, 7:15 and 8:10 a.m. Confessions will be heard Wednes day from 3-5 p.m., and again, after Wednesday's Lenten mass at 5:30 p.m. Asbury Methodist Church, 1090 Bemtzen Rd, Eugene, will have a Lenten service Wednesday at 7 a.m. St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 166 E. 13th Ave, Eugene, has scheduled Holy Communion Monday and Tuesday at 7:15 a.m. and Wednesday at 7:15 and 10 a.m. In addition, the church will have a service of lessons and carols Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Holy Baptism is being scheduled at the church next Saturday from 4 to 5 p.m., by appointment. Qood Friday Services Set Good Friday the day commented with prayer and medi tation in the Christian Church in observance of the death of Jesus on the cross will be observed in the Emerald Empire with a number of special religious services. Union services are scheduled Friday in Eugene, Springfield, CresweU, Lowell, Junction City and Reedsport. A number of churches will hold individual services during . daytime hours Friday or in the evening. There will be two union services in Eugene: one at First Methodist Church under the sponsorship of the Eugene Minis terial Assn. and another at Central Lutheran Church, Eugene, under the sponsorahip of the Lutheran Ministerial Assn. The interdenominational programa will be held from noon to 3 p.m., with worshippers free to come and go at will. The Springfield Ministerial Assn. will have its annual Good Friday service from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Ebbert Memorial Methodist Church, 832 C St. r At CresweU, four churches the CresweU Presbyterian, As sembly of God, Church of Christ and Methodist wiU co-sponsor a Good Friday service from noon until 2 p.m. at the Presby terian Church. The service will be on the seven last words, and will feature speakers from the participating churches. Lowell Open Bible Standard Church will be host to six other churches in the Lowell, Fall Creek, Dexter and Unity areaa Friday for a Good Friday service at 7:30 p.m. Ministers from the participating churches will base their meditations on the seven last words, and each church will provide special music. At Junction City, a union Good Friday service, sponsored by the Junction Ministerial Assn., will be held at 8 p.m. at the Methodist Church. Member congregations of the Lower Umpqua Ministerial Assn. The 2,800 square-foot building will be con structed adjacent to the church's present parish hall, which will be partially remodeled. When the new structure is completed, Messiah Church will have the multi-purpose building, shown at far left, the parish hall, center, and the chapel, at right. Commun ion service, 7:30 p.m. 3 Churches ' Will Hold Ancient Rite Thrqe Eugene churches Peace and Westminster Pres byterian and St. Thomas' Episcopal have scheduled an ancient church service, Tene brae, for Maundy Thursday. The service features the gradual extinguishing of the church lights or candles. The Rev. John Ewing, pastor of Peace Presbyterian, intro duced the service to Eugene area Presbyterians several years ago, and has scheduled it as a pre-Easter service at his church since that date. For several years, the service has been part of the Holy Week calendar at St. Thomas . At Peace. 3060 River Rd.. the service is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Westminster Presbyterian, 777 Coburg Rd., Eugene, will combine the service with com munion, baptism and reception of new members Thursday at 7:30 p.m. St. Thomas' service will begin at 8 p.m., and there, it will in clude installation of new acoly tes and songs by the church's Junior Choir. All three services are open to the public. Methodists ! 'Silent Meal' On Thursday A "Meal In Silence," followed by communion and a choir can tata, is planned Thursday at First Methodist Church, 1185 Willamette St., Eugene. The unusual service will be gin with an explanation of the program at the church at 6 p.m. Then, explained the Rev. Norman Conard, senior pastor of the church, "we will go to the dining room in complete silence." The meal, he said, will in clude foods such as might have been served at the first Maundy Thursday when Jesus observed the passover in the "Upper Room" with his disciples. Con ard said the meal will include lamb, rice, unleavened bread, spinach (as symbolic of herbs), dates and other fruits. And while still in the dining room, members will read the Methodist communion ritual and certain scriptual passages. bilence will be maintained as the dinner guests go to the church sanctuary. And at vari ous points in the church, the minister said, there will be "sta tions of the cross," or locations marking the seven words from the cross, where worshippers may meditate if they wish. In the sanctuary, those at the dinner will join with other wor shippers for a regular com munion service, followed by a cantata, "The Seven Last Words of Christ," by Dubois. Reservations for the dinner, which will cost 65 cents per per son, are due Tuesday at the church. The reservations may be made by calling the church Office, DI 5-8764.
