MILLEGAN Of Iht Reflater-Guard A weighlifter's peak years eome between his 30th and 35th birthdays. But, it was a 240-pound 19-year-old college freshman who atole the spotlight Sunday in the Oregon State AAU Weight lifting Championships held in the Pioneer building of the Lane County Fairgrounds, i Ken Patera, a Portland State student, awed a standing-room only crowd estimated at over 500, by shattering all Oregon heavyweight records with a three-lift total of 860 pounds. . His lift of 280 pounds in the military press established a new Pacific Northwest standard, and an effort of 250 pounds in the two-hand snatch broke a state record that had stood since 1939. "I've done better in practice iu to 20 each of the mented the bespectacled, soft- spoken, ex-Cleveland High shot putter who has been lifting for only two years. Just like New York Univer sity's Gary Gubner who lifted a world record age group total of 400 pounds in the military press as a 19-year-old, Patera is better known for his track exploits.' In 1961 he placed second in the shot put to North Eugene's Bob Graham in the state A-l prep track meet. And already this year, he has bests of 54 feet in the shot and 155 in the dis cus, and hopes to be well past the 56-foot mark before the sea son ends. Runnerup to Patera was de al . Halsten (Reglater-Guard photo by Joe Matheaon) successfuly lilted the 235-pound weight for a new state record and went on to win the 165 pound division with a three lift total of 730 pounds. Santa Clara AAU Victor CLEVELAND OB The power ful Santa Clara, Calif., Swim Club left a trail of shattered records behind as it captured the women's national AAU in door swimming championships. The Santa Clara mermaids, coached by George Maines, won eight of 13 swimming events in the four-day swimming and div ing championships and set five American records, rolling up a total of 113 Vi points. Altogether, eight American records were set and another was equalled. Standout on the Santa Clara squad was Donna De Varona blue-eyed miss not quite 16 who set three individual American marks and was on two record- setting relay teams the 400 yard freestyle and 400-yard med ley relay teams. She set records in capturing the 200-yard and 400-yard indi vidual medley in times of 2:15 and 4:47.3. Oddly enough, the backstroker failed to win the 100-yard back stroke event but apparently her time for that distance will go into the books as a record. Miss De Varona swam the 100 in 1:02.1, an American record, on the first leg of the 400-yard medley relay Thursday. But Sunday, Nina Harmar of Philadelphia, edged Miss De Va rona in the 100-yard backstroke finals, finishing in 1:02.6, also under the recognized American record of 1:03. fending champion Hacry D. Proudfoot of Eugene, a fourth year political science major at the University of Oregon. Proudfoot, in his third year of competition, and who plans to go into the diplomatic service after graduation, had a three lift total of 750 pounds. That the championships, held in conjunction with the Eugene Lions Club Home and Sports Show, drew the largest crowd ever to watch an Olympic style weightlifting match in the state of Oregon, was the observation of several of the meet officials. "It was a tremendous exhibi tion of strength," commented Cecil Phillips, manager of a local health club and holder of many weightlifting and phy sique titles himself. "It's been a long time since a crowd like this has shown up to see a weightlifting match in Oregon." Another outstanding exhibi tion was put on by Pat O'Shea wearing the colors of the Michi gan State Weightlifting club and twice National Collegiate Athletic Assn. (NCAA) runner up in the 198 pound class. O'Shea, now a physical educa tion instructor at Oregon State, had a three lift total of 810 pounds matching Patera's 250 pound record effort in the two hand snatch. Oldest of the competitors was Multnomah Athletic Club's Nick Manley, who is 33 and has been competing since 1947. Tied for the lead in the 198 pound class, going into the final lift the clean and jerk he had his glasses slip off and ruin his ef fort and bid for the title as he was attempting to put 285 pounds above his head. "Concentration and form are very important in this sport And the slightest movement or distraction or noise can ruin a lift." he said afterwards. The ladies, though, seemed to get the biggest kick out of the Mr. Oregon physique contest which was won by Portland's Orian Wiese And the trophy was an impressive one 33-36 inches high.
