EUGENE REGISTER-GUARD, Thur., March 21, 1063 Page 9B J Annual Savings $1,800 Bethel Directors Tip Hat To EWEB for Rate Cut The Bethel School Board said thank you Wednesday night to the Eugene Water & Electric Board. . It did so because EWEB recently if cided to remove its 10 per cent surcharge to customers outside the city of Eugene. Supt. Tom Powers explained that the school district will save about $1,800 on its artnual utility bill because of the surcharge erasure. The board directed Powers to send a letter to EWEB expressing gratitude. : After the superintendent explained the services that would be available to the district, the Bethel board voted also to join the Central Lane Planning Council. The council had extended an invitation to loin. . , v , Powers said the council's professional staff can offer such services as making population studies to determine , which areas of the district will develop next and how great the need will be for schools. Powers estimated the district's propor tionate share of the council's annual bud- get will be from $420 to $490. Springfield and Eugene school districts are already members. . ... ,- The greatest -time devoted to an agenda item was given by the board to proposed acceptance of a federal Housing and Home Finance Agency grant to pay for advanced planning of additions to four schools. ' i The board did, after about 40 minutes' discussion, vote to accept a $23,000 grant and to hire Wilmsen, Endicott and Un- thank as architects since that firm de signed all four buildings. The discussion concerned ways of pro moting more interest and competition among local architects for Bethel build ing projects. Several board members in dicated that the next time the district has a new building to erect they want to call a variety of architects to get their ideas before selecting a firm. , Two other items came before the board Wednesday. Powers gave the board copies of a statement of philosophy and plan and or ganization for a competitive athletic pro gram adopted by Medford schools. Powers asked the board members to look it over to see whether some of the ideas might be adaptable in Bethel district. The board also approved a revised Beth el proposal for participation in the Oregon Program during 1963-64. Powers explained that some changes had been made in the proposal for using teacher interns. The revision will cost about $7,300 more than estimated, and this amount is being re qested from Oregon Program funds. ' The Oregon Program is a state-wide program involving several colleges, the State Department of Education and 26 school districts. Supported by a $3.5 mil lion grant from the Ford Foundation, the program is an attempt to improve public school teaching, to improve public school curriculums, and to improve the prepara tion and training of teachers.
