For viewing you can have your choice of Bob Hope & Co. at 0 p.m. on channels 13 and 8, the Bell Telephone Hour on the same channels at 10 p.m., or another of those specials on Hollywood at 10 p.m. on cnan nels 9 and 12. Hope will have three singers as guests Frank Sinatra, Rob ert Goulct and youthful Brcnda Lee. Edie Adams introduces the 1963 "Hollywood Deb Slars," a dozen young actresses. As usual, the Bell Telephone Hour will offer the viewer the full range from classical to pop ular music. Leonlyne Price does two arias from Verdi's "II Trovatore," and Erica Morini docs Bruch's "Concerto No. 1 for Violin." Bolh are fine per formances. Carol Lawrence sings and dances her way through some Johann Struass waltzes. Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme handle the pop music. "Hollywood: The Great Slars" promises lo be a great show. Tacked into a nostalgic hour are scenes from films like "The Westerner," "It Happened One Night," "Casablanca," "On the Waterfront," "Mitfits," and "In herit the Wind." Slars featured Include Kath arine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, r.rrol Hynn, Hrdy Lamarr, Charles Boyer, Marlene Diet rich, and others. Two special features are a superbly edited recap of James Cagney's tough guy portrayals and an account of Marilyn Monroe's brief "Golden Girl" reign. Henry l'onda Is host. The lwal chapter of the Am erican Federation of Musicians has voted to provide a $300 scholarship to send one high school student in the chapter's Jurisdiction. That jurisdiction covers the cities listed above. The string congress will he held June 23 through Aug. 17. It is for string players ages 16 lo 23. The student from this area Is to be chosen by some type of competition, details of which will be announced later. And that it is frequently a stinkeroo? Having thus condemned my mailman to the weight of the dropdead letter brigade, I offer the following anecdote about the time a television potentate tried nightly to convince Ed ward G. Robinson to do a ries, starting at $5,000 a week and finally promising $12,000. This was the actor's reply: "If I had already done your series and your money was in my bank account, I would not in the slightest feel better, richer or uplifted." Pads Out Show Natures and bank accounts vary, but I wish that Skelton had talked to Robinson, or somebody, before he agreed to his extended video duty, an hour instead of 30 minutes. As matters now stand, and Tues day night was a typical ex ample, you can watch the co median's opening monologue, go away for 40 minutes and come back for his closing pan tomime sketch, devoting your new-found spare time to some- Loquacious Boxer Among Best Known By CYNTHIA LOWRY or the Associated Press NEW YORK David Brink ley, Charles de Gaulle and Cas sius Clay were the best known names in a list of 37 VIPs used as an identity quiz for 67 fresh man at Western Kentucky State College recently. Brinkley was identified by 66 of the students; De Gaulle by 65, and boxer Clay by 64. On the other end of the scale, 62 were unable lo identify correct ly Associate Justice Byron White of the Supreme Court: 55 missed Senate Minority Lead er Everett Dirkscn; 53 didn't know Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield one student thought he was a movie star. One student among the 36 who missed the correct identification of the artists Pablo Picasso, thought he was a tennis player. Fifty-six students could not identify Secretary of Health, Ed ucation and Welfare Anthony J. Celebrceze. Television names, generally, did pretty well in the lest. Only six students missed Dick Van Dyke, and nine, Carol Burnett. Fourteen, incredible as it may sound, were unable lo peg Rich ard Burton the same num ber that failed lo recognize baseball player Stan Musial. Results of the quiz were sent to NBC's newscaster David Brinkley by the woman English instructor who gave the tost. Upshot of the lest is that she assigned all 67 to read a daily newspaper and weekly news magazines. Obviousously, they already watch television. Venezuelan Officials Investigate Sabotage CARACAS, Venezuela l.Tt Sabotage of two pipelines Tues day held down the flow of crude oil to the Lake Maracaibo refin ery of the American-owned Creole Petroleum Corp., but of ficials said production had not been curtailed. Still A Wonder On ABC-TV recently, Sid Cae sar murdered this trend of "the-longer-the-better" in a sequence called "Endless Theatre." It be gan with him getting off a Paris-to-New York plane, sud denly remembering he forgot his gloves and making another round-trip to pick them up. Skelton, despite his increasing crudity in the overlong skits, is nevertheless a wonder. He is a great, infectious monologist and physical comedian. He noted Tuesday night that California would be nice when it's fin ished. He made his pantomime of a backstage janitor much bet ter than his material. It is im possible not to catch the warmth of that funny face. But the tip off is that Marilyn Maxwell sang three songs in her mid-show guest spot; she is a nice gal, but hearing her three songs ap proaches torture. The Channel Swim: NBC-TV confirmed that Robert Taylor will star next season in a week ly series based on the field ac tivities of the U. S. Department of Health, Education and Wel fare ... He portrays a special assistant to the secretary . . . The network says the dramas will be fictionalized but semi documentary in approach . . . Robert Loggia costars as Tay lors right-hand man. Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall guests Monday on ABC-TV's "Discovery '63" . . . Also Monday, Postmaster-General Edward Day visits NBC TV's "Today" show . . .
