Amby Frederick, foundation director, said: "Funds for his research activities are available as well as equipment, facilities and personnel." Pickering recently resigned as director of the center and was replaced by Edward S. West. Pickering had asked to con tinue as administrator of some federal grants, but David Baird was appointed to replace him. Pickering charged Saturday that the latter appointment amounted to an effort to re lieve him of more and more duties. Frederick said Pickering "has complete freedom to pursue his scientific work along normally accepted channels without the 'aVilnistrative difficulties' to which he continually refers." Pickering said his dismissal from the position is an "issue of importance for scientists everywhere." Five Youngsters Killed in Blaze EAST HAMPTON, N. Y. Now thore is a "Grandpa Moses" on the American scene. He is Forrest King Moses and a painter apparently cut from the samo canvas as his mother. Moses will be 70 on his next birthday and has 14 grandchil dren. He was a painter long be fore his mother's death, quite unlike Grandma Moses who took up painting only in the sunset of her life. But Moses was determined not to benefit from his mother's success. Mony of his paintings bear the name "Forrest King" and there are those who still are unaware of his connection with Grandma Moses. Like those of his mother, most of the Grandpa Moses paintings have a certain sprightliness of subject matter and color. He chooses for sub jects those rural scenes from what has come to be recognized as Grandma Moses country. This is the valley where the Green Mountain of Vermont, the Berkshlres of Massachusetts and the Adirondacks of New York meet. Moses favors out door subjects. Moses, by trade, is a carpen ter but during the winter months devotos most of his time to tho easel. He works In a small, two room structure at a table that Is more of a workbench. Though she took to It late in life, painting is a tradition in Grandma Moses' family. Her fa ther did landscapes and two of her sisters were known locally for their paintings and draw ings. Her brother has paintings scattered in homes throughout the countryside. In keeping with such family history, Grandma Moses nephew also has preserved countryside scenes In oils and his daughter is carrying on, though her work is In pastels. The talent extends to Grandpa Moses' grandchildren, so much to that the Grandma Moses shadow may extend over Ameri can art for years to come. Meredith Attends NAACP Meeting JACKSON, Miss. Meredith, who finished his first term at the previously all white school last week, is here visiting his wife and child. And Vice President Lyndon Johnson, chairman of the Na tional Aeronautics and Space Council, reported the United States "generated a greater rate of space progress than Russia, He said the United States put more than BO satellite payloads Into orbit during the year, com pared with 15 for Russia. The annual reports shed light on secret Air Force activities in space, stating "space capsule re covery Is foremost among teen niaues being developed." They also disclosed exciting plans for use of weather satel lites to track icebergs, spot for est fires, survey ice and snow and even trail clouds of locusts. Kennedy said that benefits of the peaceful space program, both in its civilian and military aspects, are becoming increas ingly evident. He told Congress: "Not only have the horizons of scientific knowledge been lifted, but the resulting interna tional cooperation and world wide dissemination of knowl edge and understanding have strengthened the world image of this country as a force for peace and freedom. "The economic benefits of our national space program are also revealing themselves at an increasing rate. ... In both numbers and complexity of space projects, the past year was the most successful in our brief but active space history." Johnson said that "based upon available Information, it can be concluded that the rec ords of two countries were close ly similar in regard to the ra tios of space successes to space failures." He said that at the end of the year the Russians were still ahead in size and total of weights placed in orbit, in en gine thrust and in development of the art of joining vehicles in space. The President s report out lined Weather Bureau and Na tional Aeronautics and Space Administration plans to use Ti ros weather watching systems as an operational weather satellite called TOSS (for Tiros opera tional satellite system). Employ satellites as weath er data collection vehicles, pick ing up information from isolated weather stations and even from ocean buoys. 4. Locating forest fires by specially equipped satellites. 5. Develop capability in a satellite to measure snow depth and weather content as well as to photograph snow cover. . 6. Adapt weather satellites for photographing clouds of lo custs. The report said that 60 nations spend $15 million to spot and control locusts. The Air Force has had little to say of its space work other than to announce launchings from Vandenburg Air Force Base, Calif. But Kennedy's report said the Air Force "continued its launch of space technology satellites at an increasing rate during 1962. . . . Space capsule recovery is foremost among techniques be ing developed." It added that during 1962, 13 research packages containing about 65 experiments were sent into orbit. The experiments included measurements of energetic par ticles and electron density. The summary showed that on Dec. 13 the Air Force placed five satellites in orbit ranging between 139 and 1,725 miles of altitude. Although it might be suggest ed that at least part of the five satellites were particles of a single satellite, the preface to the summary said that a payload was identified as an object put into orbit only if it accom plished some specific research purpose and returned data to Earth.
