On September 9, the congre gation opened a Sunday church school in buildings on the church's future building site, 3800 Hilyard St. The church moved worship services to re modeled buildings on the site after the collapse of the Sunset Home Chapel in the Oct. 12 windstorm. Organizing minister for the congregation is the Rev. Gor don Crider. Six Elder-Trustees Up for election as church of ficers Sunday, which is con sidered "just a formality," church officials said, will be six elder-trustees. These will be Shirley Foster, clerk of session; Ray Walter, stewardship-finance; L y 1 e Weldy, worship; Sidney Clay pool, building council; Clarence Graham, evangelism, and Gil bert Shibley. All of the deacons for the new congregation will be women. They are Mrs. Jerry Janscn, Victoria Stephenson, Mrs. Dan Morris, Mrs. James Waning, Mrs. C. N. Chapman and Mrs. Charles Lemmer. In addition to committee chairman named "within the session," Mrs. Gilbert Shibley has been appointed as chairman of the church's Christian educa tion committee, and Douglas Lcedy was named to manage a fund-raising program for the church's first permanent build ing. Charles Pyle and Mrs. Sidney Claypool will be treasurers of the congregation, and Mrs. Mervin Ilisel has been appoint ed by the church's Christian education committee and the session-elect to service as Sun day school superintendent. Methodist Church Welcomes You By PEPPER BERKELEY Of the KefUtrGiiard: In the past 40 years, mem bers of St. Alice Catholic Church in Springfield have worshipped in homes, rented buildings and a railroad car. And the present small church, located at 15th and F Streets, is an Army surplus building purchased from Camp White after World War II. Sometime next year, mem bers were told this week, the parish will have its first really new church building. Detailed plans for the new structure, which will be lo cated on the site of the pres ent building, were unveiled last Sunday at parish meet ings by Donald Lutes and Kenneth Staack of Lutes and Amundson, Springfield archi tects, and the Rev. Louis H. Sohler, pastor of the parish. Throughout the plans, Father Sohler's suggestion of "the tree of life" is used as a theme. This symbolism, Staack said in an interview this week, occurs many times in various forms throughout the Old and New Testaments. And, he said, it is especially appro priate in Springfield where a large portion of the econo my depends on the lumber industry. Staack said construction will begin next fall, and com pletion of the church build ing which will seat 700 per sons is scheduled for 1964. And when completed, the church may be Springfield's largest. It will serve St. Alice's congregation of 700 families, and is designed also for use by the children at tending the adjacent St. Alice ' School, who attend daily Mass. Each Sunday, Staack said, 1,600 persons attend services in the present church. The present building is lo cated on a plot of approxi mately five acres. Included on this land is St. Alice School, the school gym, a rectory, the church, parking lots for approximately 100 cars and a convent. Radio Bible School Leader To Hold Eugene Programs William W. Orr, who conducts a "radio school of the Bibie" in California, and who is author of a number of books on re ligion and family life, will be gin a series of programs Sun day at First Baptist Church, Eu gene. Sunday, he will speak at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. His weeknight addresses are scheduled Mon day through Friday at 7:30 p.m., and he will speak at the church for both Sunday morning serv-l ices Feb. 3. All these units, Staack said, eventually will be integrated under a unified site plan with the church as the center. The architectural drawings call for a fountain and circu lar paved area at what would be the intersection of 15th and F Streets if the streets were "cut through." Immediately to the east of this area, several low steps will lead up into a landscaped forecourt, which Staack de scribed as symbolic of the "garden of Paradise." This, in turn, leads to the church. The church building itself, Staack said, will have an ex terior finish of native woods,' which will also be used throughout the building. The north wall has high, narrow windows of colored glass, and there are similar high win dows at the extreme south east corner to light the sanc tuary. Above the two identical doors, the architects have planned a tower reminiscent of a belfry, which will add height to the building. Immediately inside the front doors will be the bap tistry. Its placement, and the emphasis given other interior elements, Staach said, is planned to give prominence to the sacraments of the church. The arrangement of the church generally and the sanctuary in particular, Staack said, is "in anticipa- tion of the restudying of the liturgy ... at the Second Ecumenical Council." With this in mind, there is a lectern on the south side of the sanctuary, and the pul pit is on the north. The architects have planned a simple altar with a canopy to be placed in the center of the sanctuary, allowing the priest to face the people as he says mass. In the cfiurch building itself, there are two ceiling heights high in the main part of the 500-seat church, which will be used mainly for day; a question hour Thursday, and "Teenagers Are Here to Stay," Friday. Also included in the church plan are vestment rooms for the clergy and acolytes, a choir room and a brides' room. The confessionals will be on the south wall of the building. Eventually, Staack said, the church will be linked to other units in the parish complex with covered walkways. Ad ditional parking facilities are planned, he said. The general plan of the church, the forecourt and the fountain (which will be built after the church) is designed to symbolize an ancient church Staack said. Waters of the fountain, he explained, will symbolize the baptistry. The forecourt, he aid, is also traditional in early churches, the service often began in the courtyard, where Catholics and non Catholics heard the sermon or "instructional" part of the service. Gale Roberts of Eugene will be general contractor, Staack said, and mechanical con sultants will be Marquess and Marquess of Eugene. Electri cal consultants will be Mar quess and Yates, also of Eu gene. Mitchell and Mac Arthur, Eugene, will be the landscape architects, and Dr. Archie Tunturo of Portland will be acoustical consultant. Art work will be by Emer ald Empire artists "whenever possible," Staack said.
