TELEVISION SCHEDULES . . n-fc-v ""-Ff ' MONDAY, JANUARY 21, 1963 Sunday Television Superior Music Highlights Viewing By CYNTHIA LOWRY of the Associated Press NEW YORK An extraordi nary thing happened Sunday night: During 2Vt hours of su perior music and variety shows on network television not one single comedian imitated a Ken nedy. As recently as last week even the panel and game shows were awash with .New England ac cents and it was getting to be quite a bore. Ed Sullivan's CBS show is be coming more stylish and smooth all the time and his production numbers Sunday night were particularly handsome. Charlie Manna, the evening's comedian, had a bright fresh monologue a French travel agent advising clients how to behave as tourists in America. Dl 3-337.3 8:30 A.M. to S P.M. Dl 3-4146 After 5 P.M. "Here's Edie" on ABC was a quiet, elegant 30-minute special. Star Edie Adams, Stan Getz of "bossa nova" renown and the Roger Wagner chorale were so phisticated and smoothly effec tive. Some of the effects un usual camera angles, trick shots and blinking backgrounds were a bit distracting and unneces sary. There was a smooth Dinah Shore show on NBC. Pianist Liberace playing Chopin by can dle light, ragtime specialist big "Tiny" Little and jazz artists Peter Nero and Ray Charles were the guest stars. Their wide ly varied styles of playing were pulled together neatly lor an especially tuneful and handsome hour. Dinah Shore expects to start television sabbatical on May 12 after the last monthly show of her current series. Many peo ple will miss her show next sea son, and we women particularly will miss looking at her lovely clothes. Worst of it is we'll soon be missing television s only other high-style performer, Lo retta Young. NBC is eagerly awaiting Niel sen ratings of last Wednesday night's Bob Hope Christmas spe cial, which took over the Perry Como spot for one night. Rat- ngs taken in just the New York City area by a rival audience estimating service indicated that the program chopped down CBS' rival "Beverly Hillbillies" the season's top-ranking show to a very poor second place. Tuition Plan Opposed By State Legislator SALEM W Rep. Richard L. Kennedy, D Eugene, said Mon day he was against a proposal by the American Assn. of Universi ty Women to increase student tuition at state universities in order to increase faculty sala ries. "I agree completely that fac ulty salaries are inadequate and that new buildings should not be postponed," Kennedy said. But he said "it is -important that we do not price students of modest means out of our col leges and universities." 'Alumni Fun' Quiz Show Makes Debut By RICi: DC BROW Of the United Pres. International HOLLYWOOD As everyone knows, one of the real signs of status in television is to become so famous and illustrious that you are allowed to take part as a panelist in stupid quiz shows. One of the more tasteful off shoots of such programs was CBS-TV's "College Bowl," in which teams of students from various schools match wits. And, following in this vein, ABC-TV Sunday offered the de but of "Alumni Fun," a half- hour weekly question-and-an- swer show in which teams of prominent graduates compete for cash for their alma maters. Frankly, none of Sunday's questions measured up to the one asked of yours truly by a starlet after the recent premiere of the movie "Lawrence of Arabia," the story of T. E. Law rence. "How did he ever have time to write 'Lady Chatterley's Lover?' she asked and went back to see the film again next day upon learning it wasn't D. H. Lasrence. If, however, it moves you to watch successful citizens scram ble over unrelated questions based primarily on parrot-type knowledge, then you could do a lot worse than "Alumni Fun." It is amiable, is a good source of information for crossword puzzles and, besides, who doesn't enjoy watching a promi nent person look occasionally silly before millions? Sunday's opener was between Tulane and George Washington Universities. The Tulane panel ists were ABC commentator Howard K. Smith, tennis Ace Ham Richardson and historian- newspaperman Charles Dufour. George Washington teammates were football star Eddie LcBar- on; Eva Adams, U.S. Mint dire tor, and business executive Ja cob Rosenthal. The permament host is educator-commentator John K. M. McCaffery, and out side of a tendency to throw around the word "brilliant," he filled the bill neatly. Just to relieve you at once, George Washington won, .and will return next week against a University of Texas team which includes former Gov. Allan Shi vers and actor Rip Torn. The program starts with biographies of the contestants', and Sunday we learned, among other things. that Smith was a track star, which certainly is an asset for any newsman. The Channel Swim: Dan Blocker, 300-pound star of "Bon anza," dances the bossa nova Jan. 31 on NBC-TV's Andy Williams Show . , . Hugh O'Brian subs for Raymond Burr on CBS TV's "Perry Mason" Feb. 14 . . . Julie London plays a singer on NBC-TV's "The Eleventh Hour" Feb. 13. Fess Parker, of ABC-TV's doomed "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" series, was offered the lead in a test film for a pos sible new weekly show based on John Steinbeck's "Travels with Charley"; it would tell of a mod ern writer's adventures in re discovering America. Other possible new series: George C. Scott, who refused an Oscar nomination for the film "The Hustler," as a New York social worker in a one-hour show for CBS-TV produced by David Susskind . . . And "The War den," also an hour long and aimed at CBS-TV, about a prison warden, produced by the Bing Crosby firm which turned out Ben Casey. Still other new scries possi bilities: "Emergency Squad," about an emergency service di vision of the New York police . . . "The Travels of Jamie Mc Pheeters," based on the prize winning novel of the same name, starring Dan O'Harlihy . . . and "Face to Face," an NBC-TV project about a mar riage counselor, with Dana An drews and Natalie Trundy; if sold, it is possible the scries would be shot in entirety in Chi cago.
