Drawings for the new building, which will be a fellowship ' hall with church school classrooms, were prepared by David -Harkness of Bakersfield, Calif., an architect who formerly . lived in Eugene. Linchan, pastor of St. Mark's Catholic Church in Eugene, was appointed earlier this month as a member of a new archdiocese liturgical commission. The ap pointment of Father Linchan and eight other priests In the archdiocese was made by the Most Rev. Edward D. Howard, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Portland In Oregon. The commission, officials said, will assist pastors in putting into effect liturgical changes made by the Second Vatican Council. EVANGELIST David C. The "overall undergraduate preparation" of the students, however, has risen, Joyce feels. , He has been dean of the 'graduate seminary since July 1, and prior to that, served in the pastoral ministry for many years before becoming a pro fessor at Christian Theological Seminary at Indianapolis, Ind. Joyce, asked to comment on the current problems in many denominations about "liberal teachings" in seminaries, said that the problem is really one of presenting the findings of Biblical research and study to the laity who are behind the seminaries in this field. But there is "an encouraging sign" today, Joyce said. Many seminaries are conducting lay schools of theology, he said, and laymen "are coming in great numbers" to participate. In ad dition, churches are offering more classes in theology, and more laymen are recognizing that study of theology is neces sary to understand their faith. Joyce will return to Oregon in April for an Oregon Chris tian Ministers Retreat near Portland. Church Notes EUGENE FRIENDS Meeting is currently conducting a short course in Quaker background, belief and discipline for members of the meeting and for the public. The hour-long meetings are held Sundays at 10 a.m. at the meeting house, 2274 Onyx St., Eugene. Organizers of the course, which will continue through March, are Mrs. Francis Dart and Edward Thatcher. COTTAGE GROVE A missionary to Haiti, C. Stanford -Kelly, will speak at the First Baptist Church here Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Kelly has served in Haiti since 1944. The public is invited to attend. MEMBERS of the Voters Assembly of Grace Lutheran Church recently elected Edwin J. Weber for a second term as president. Also re-elected was Gerald D. Gauche, secretary. Karl W. University Religious Forum Some dissatisfaction was expressed this week by organ izers and committee heads of Religious Forum Week, which ended Wednesday night at the University of Oregon. Generally, the comments at the conclusion from these sources indicated several ar eas of dissatisfaction: There was little or no discussion between the speak ers, who represented differ 'Horses Dr. Camilla Anderson, direc tor of the outpatient depart ment of the Oregon State Hos pital at Salem, became a psychi atrist, she says, "because of a load of horses." This she revealed at the re ligious forum session this week. She graduated from the Uni versity of Oregon in 1925, then went on to the University of Oregon Medical School and graduated from there in 1929. Instead, the monsignor said, there is an attitude toward Protestants of "a triple unity" a "unity" to be considered in three ways: formal unity, truth and love and charity. Speakers were in and out during the week not all the speakers were able to participate in the entire pro gram. "I have not been happy with it (Religious Forum Week) this year," said Lois Greenwood, director of the mended k so she took the New York job. This story is typical of Doctoi Anderson and her humor. In a lecture, such as the one she gave this week at the Univer sity of Oregon's Religious For um Week, she speaks with a "homey" touch grammar is sometimes sacrificed for humor or to emphasize a particular point. s But her books "Saints, Sin ners and Psychiatry," and "Be- major opinion groups at the Council the group "that is afraid that traditional Catho lic beliefs will be watered down," and a second group, which believes that much of Protestant and Hebrew Bibli cal research "is valid." The latter group, the mon signor said, is prevailing. He predicted that the Coun cil's "forward-looking" group will control, and that there ('was no possibility of a new dogma being discussed that would bring further separa tion "between Catholics and Protestants." Later, she was introduced at a discussion by University of Oregon President Arthur S. Flemming. In his introduction, he referred to one of her books, saying he wanted to read it. Before the introduction was over, Doctor Anderson had auto graphed a copy and presented it to Flemming. Nor is Doctor Anderson shy in taking digs at her own pro fession. ' "Psychiatry," she quipped, "is sometimes thought of as a god less place We have our gods . . for a time it was Sigmund Freud."
