Music will present a concert
Friday as a featured event of
the 12th Annual Conference on
Music Education scheduled this
Weekend at the university.
The concert, open to the pub
lic as well as conference dele
gates, will begin at 8 p.m., in
the music school auditorium.
Several selections by the Uni
versity Trio are listed on the
program. Members of the group
are William Woods, piano; Law
rence Maves, violin, and Robert
Hladky, cello.
Soloists will be George Hop
kins, piano; Neil Wilson, bari
tone; George Boughton, violin,
and Everett S. Anderson, bass.
Accompanyists will be Woods
and Homer Keller.

favorable in December in spite
of the usual seasonal increase
in unemployment.
The monthly report of the Eu
gene office of the State Em
ployment Service says that from
November to December agricul
tural employment fell by 110,
construction jobs declined by
about 460, and food processing
and lumber production reduced
the size of their payrolls.
These losses were largely off
set, however, by the hiring of
500 additional temporary work
ers by retail stores and by addi
tions of temporary help in the
post office.
The unemployment rate per
centage of those covered by un
employment insurance who are
out of work was S per cent in
December. This compares with
6.5 per cent in December a year
ago. In the past five years only
one December has shown a bet
ter rate, in 1959 when there was
only 4.6 per cent unemploy
ment. The employment office re
ports that, "The performance of
the area's economy in recent
months plus favorable business
forecasts for the immediate fu
ture suggest that unemployment
will remain low."
