Students Come to Grips With an American Problem By BILL RICHMOND Of the Reslster-auard Murder Trial Begins for Iligh School Student! Headlines such as this usu ally bring shock and grief to a community. However, a trial currently being conducted at Willam ette High School northwest ot Eugcno ib evoking no emo tion except from those affect ed all seniors in an Ameri can Problems class. It is a mock trial, with "murder" as the crime. The trial is being conducted as part of a classroom project. Ralph Bccbe, the instructor, says the "crime" is reconstruc ted with no pretense, "except 4,342 Persons Tour Savannah PORTLAND (UPD A total of 4,342 persons visited the nu clear ship Savannah hero Mon day, bringing the total for three days to 20,012. English Professor To Give Lecture The first Browsing Room lec ture of tho winter term at the University of Oregon will be given Wednesday. It will fea ture James Hall, associate pro fessor of English. Hall will speak on "Radical Short Story, With Examples." The lecture is to start at 7:30 p. m. The Browsing Room is in the Erb Memorial Student Union. in murder cases we do just protend we have a victim." Four trials have been in progress during the past week at tho high school, one for each of the American Prob lems classes. Initiated, con ducted and administered en tirely by students, the trials concern two "murders," con version of public property to private use and concealing stolen property. In tho "12:10 murder," so called hecauso the class be gins at 12:10 p.m., a youth is accused of shooting another during an art class. Only the teacher and (he two youths were aware the "murder" was to be commit ted, as the event took place last week. Several students admitted afterward to a "panicky" feeling. The trial Itself comes so near the real thing that an observer feels a little of the awe one feels in a court of law. This is tho fourth year in which Becbo has conducted these sham crimes and trials, Bethel School Board To Meet Wednesday Salary schedules tor classi fied personnel and possibilities for acquiring an additional school site will be discussed by the Bethel school board Wednes day. , The board will hold a regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. in the ad ministrative office, 4840 Bargcr Ave., Eugene. Other agenda items include a proposed 10B3 B4 school calen dar, athletic policies for grades seven and eight, and Oregon Program proposals for 1963-64. and from all reports the stu dents enjoy them. Other class es often are dismissed so the students may attend these sessions. There was "standing room only" Friday as the "12:10" trial entered the third day. The entire procedure, from arrest through trial, with the exception of the preliminary hearing and grand jury indict ment, is conducted by the students, with expert advice. The exceptions are assumed to have occurred. Lane County Sheriff Harry Marlowe made the fictional "arrest" while Dist. Atty. Wil liam Fryc and Circuit Court Judge Edward Leavy gave advice. In Lcavy's words this work done by the students is a "good thing." "It is much better for the kids to do all the work them selves," Leavy said, "rather than nave many people look ing over their shoulders. We arc always glad to give the advice needed, though." Bccbe says his students at tend actual trials in the court house, read books of trial procedure, "and in fact the '"attorneys" have been study ing Oregon statutes for pre cedent and to see if they can come up with a technicality to help their case." The students are selected for their roles in numerous ways. They may request a certain job, be selected by Bccbe or in some cases elect ed to their posts by the class. Participants in the "12:10" case are Bob Dougherty, de fendant; Stan Meyer, judge; Phil Groshong, district attor ney; Bill Miller, defense counsel, and David Mitchell as the main character the victim. O'Neal was arrested on Highway 126 east of Spring field in November and had orig inally entered a plea of innocent. Sierra Club to Meet Eugene Chapter of the Sierra Club will meet for lunch at the Erb Memorial Student Union on the University of Oregon cam pus at noon Wednesday. Vandalism Reported Two incidents of vandalism in Bethel District schools were re ported Monday to the Lane County sheriff's office.
