But wait a minute he's also a lawyer. And wait another minute he also on call for hospital duty and police work. And that s not all he often op erates like a private eye. Hot do! Some wags about town have suggested that if the scrips could be set on a ranch with Corey as tho father of three sons, and if a couple of produc tion numbers could be thrown in from time to time, there would bo nothing left for tele vision lo do. In short, he is a little of everything, and there fore not much of anything. If, of course, you find it en tertaining to walch mental cases regularly, then you will havo a ball looking at "The Eleventh Hour." But since Corey is really not much of anything, tho show is most likely lo have its rare moments when he and his equal ly unimpressive associate, .lack (iing, are merely incidental which was the case last night. Superior l'erformaiice It was a sudsy thing, Wednes day nighl'g venture, even to the tear-jerking music; but it got superior performances from Barbara Rush and David Jans sen in a story of a man who subtly weaves doubts in the mind of Ins ex -wife, a former mental patient, to gain custody of their daughter. Vsychiatrs was distinctly sec ondary to mystery, even though Iho show is introduced by an ink splotch for "authenticity On (he niatler of suilsiness. a recent meeting here of the Wrilers (iuilil produced com plaints that there is too much of a soapy flavor in scripts in many of the new series. In the television industry, this definite trend is talked of as giving the shows more "heart" this season. This has obvious advantages. Sentiment of the slobbering variety is the lowest common denominator, with instant mass appeal. In addition it requires the least writing, acting or di recting ability. Legitimate hero ic dialogue, for instance, re quires knowledge of and inter est in people of heroic talents, efficiencies and natures; where as our video writers seem so obsessed with defying the com monplace that you are almost not "in" unless you are a pro fessional loser. Professional Humanists NBC-TV has found it easier for a star to be full of sympathy than talent. The psychiatrist in "The Eleventh Hour," Hie rodeo rider in "Wide Country." the reporter in "Saints and Sinners," the young idol in "Dr. Kildare," even the slightly heroic lawyer of "Sam Benedict" all are real ly playing the same inlerchange ahl part; Professional human ists. And while this may have ad mirable points, 1 maintain that soma flagrant talent and Indi vidualism is preferable, nn mat ter how well luUaUootd a, ausav sage or direction may be. The Channel Swim: Charles Boyer plays a Latin dictator on NBC-TV's Dick Powell show Nov. 13. . . Berlin Tunnel Special Topic On Oct. 31 NEW YORK Wl The Na tional Broadcasting Co. proceed ed Thursday with preparations for a 90-minule special televi sion program Oct. 31 about an escape tunnel under the Berlin wall. -Announcement of the project last Thursday precipitated a running controversy. Seventeen of the West Berlin students who dug the tunnel said they had asked NBC not to show the film. So did the West Berlin Senate, which expressed fear for the safety of those who helped 29 East Germans escape to freedom. The U.S. State De partment also was drawn into the matter. An NBC statement Wednes day said that "at no time did NBC receive a request from any government agency to withdraw from film coverage of the dig ging of a tunnel under the Ber lin wall." A spokesman added that the network stood on an earlier statement asserting its confi dence that both the State De partment and the West Berlin city government, when fully in formed concerning the pro gram's nature and content "will agree with NBC that it will not be injurious to the interests of the governments and individ uals involved." - A Slate Department spokes man said Wednesday that when the department heard of NBC's participation in an escape tun nel, it "felt iLwise to indicate to network officials its concern about such activities in Berlin." NBC maintains that the com ments are based on "incomplete information about the pro gram." NBC plans to show the faces of only three of the 20 tunnel diggers with whom it arranged for filming rights. Television Previews Council at Rome News Analysis Program Topic The Ecumenical Council will be discussed Thursday on "News Dimensions", the new analysis television program originated by the University of Oregon un der tha Radio-TV Forum Coun cil. The program, at 9 p.m. on stations KOAC-TV and KOAP- TV, channels 7 and 10, will fea ture as guest speakers, Rev. Wesley G. Nicholson of the First Congregational Church of Eugene; Rev. Louis H. Sohler of Saint Alice Parish, Spring field; and Professor Quirinus Brccn of the University history department. Interviewers on Ihe program will be senior and graduate stu dents in journalism and speech. For the Thursday program they will be Dale Leach, Portland; Mike Kramer and Don Porter, both of Eugene. The program will include an analysis of Ihe Ecumenical Council as a news story and a review and analysis of the world press coverage.
